ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom is day-to-day with a knee strain after he was injured in Tuesday's loss in Nashville. Backup goalie Josh Harding will start for Minnesota in Thursday's game against Winnipeg. Wild coach Mike Yeo said Backstrom will be reevaluated later Thursday to determine whether he will be able to back up Harding. "We'll just have to see how he feels tomorrow," Yeo said. "Good news that it's nothing serious." Backstrom was injured during a collision with Nashville's Eric Nystrom. As Nystrom ran into Backstrom, the Wild goalie slammed into the goal post. He left the game with Minnesota trailing 2-1 and gave way to Harding. It was a tough situation for Harding to enter, as Nystrom was awarded a penalty shot on the same play that resulted in his collision with Backstrom. Nystrom scored on the shot to give the Predators a 3-1 lead in the first period, a deficit the Wild couldn't overcome as they fell to 0-1-2. In more than two periods of play Tuesday, Harding allowed just the one goal to Nystrom on 20 shots. Thursday will mark his first start of the season. "I came in here knowing I'm going to have to play some games -- and some big games -- and find a way to win," said Harding, who played in 10 games last season, including all five of Minnesota's playoff games when Backstrom was injured. "I'm going to be ready whenever they call my number. Whenever I'm in there, I'm going to try to give the team a chance to win." Even with the Wild's top goalie not starting Thursday, Yeo remains confident in his backup after seeing Harding step into Tuesday's game. "What I liked is how he responded," Yeo said of Harding. "I can't imagine how difficult that is for a goalie to come in and the first shot that you have to face is a penalty shot -- let alone come in and you haven't even had a chance to really stretch. I thought that was a very difficult situation to come into, and I thought he played a very strong game after that." Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter

Wild lose goaltender Niklas Backstrom to injury on Tuesday night

Goaltender Niklas Backstrom left the Wild's game against the Predators Tuesday 11:14 into the first period after a collision with Nashillve's Eric Nystrom. The former Wild forward was on a breakaway when he was slashed from behind by Wild defenseman Keith Ballard causing him to lose his footing and fall into Backstrom. The contact caused the back of Backstrom's right...

Wild goaltender hurt when pushed back into post

Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom has hurt his right leg in the first period against the Nashville Predators, knocking him out of the game. The Wild said after the first period Tuesday night that Backstrom will be evaluated Wednesday for a lower body injury. Backstrom was pushed back into the post at 11:14 of the first when Wild defenseman Keith Ballard tripped Predators...

Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom (knee) listed as day-to-day

As reported earlier this week, Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom was injured against the Nashville Predators during their game Tuesday night, a 3-2 loss where he let up two goals on five shots and sustained the injury when Nashville forward Eric Nystrom crashed into him and accidentally jammed Backstroms’s leg into the post. Today however, the Wild have announced Backstrom...

With Wild still winless, Yeo makes some changes

Mike Yeo was relieved to hear Wednesday that goaltender Niklas Backstrom who strained his right knee in Tuesday’s loss at Nashville is not expected to be sidelined for long. Still the Wild coach confirmed that Josh Harding will start in goal Thursday against Winnipeg — and the rest of the lineup will look different as well. With the Wild still searching for its first victory...

Wild relieved to get pressure of first win out of the way

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Through the first three games of the season, the Minnesota Wild felt they had played well enough to win, but it didn't translate in the standings. Mike Yeo's team skated to an 0-1-2 record to open the year. Finally, the Wild have a win to show for their efforts. Minnesota outplayed visiting Winnipeg in just about every category Thursday night at Xcel...

Penalties doom Wild in 3-2 loss to Nashville, Backstrom injured to make for a painful evening

As a football coach, one thing you try to remind players is that they never know when there last play will be.  The moral of such a saying is that they should never take a play off or for granted.  Of course, its a sport but on any given play an injury can occur and a player's season can come to an ignominious end.  I personally was fortunate to be mostly injury-free throughout...

Wild goalie Josh Harding run over by Rich Clune

This is unacceptable. Running over the opposition's goalie is a gutless, bush league act, most of the time because they're easy pickings. I guess this is the only way a talentless player like Richard Clune is going to stay in the NHL, by getting into fights and running over goalies. Also, the refs blew the call here, Clune and Stoner should have both been given 5-minute...

Suter unphased by becoming the "enemy"

July 4, 2012, Ryan Suter signed a thirteen year, $98 million contract with the Minnesota Wild, that made him no longer a Nashville Predator. Fans of the Predators have held onto the grudge because his excuse to signing elsewhere was for "family reasons". The Wisconsin native returned to the Music City last season to play one game, where he was booed by 17,113 fans inside...

Brad Ratgen: First Central Division Game for Wild in Nashville Tonight!

The Minnesota Wild go on the road for the first time this year to take on the Nashville Predators in Music City for the Preds home opener. With the wounds still raw from Ryan Suter leaving Nashville for Minnesota, that factor alone makes this a game worth watching. Add to the mix that for the first time in franchise history, the Wild appear to be more focused on their offensive...

First Thomas, then Backstrom, Nash and Hartnell

As Paul noted, Tim Thomas appeared to tweak his groin or some othe part of his "lower body" in the Florida Panthers' 2-1 loss to Philly on Tuesday, and while I was preparing to have my beard trimmed for the first time in six years, Pro Hockey Talk's Ryan Dadoun notes that Niklas Backstrom got dinged in the Wild's 3-2 loss to Nashville...
