As Paul noted this afternoon, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun believes that Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall's having a Norris Trophy-caliber season, but Kronwall doesn't agree with that assessment per se. Yahoo Sports' Nicholas J. Cotsonika's incredibly thorough Three Periods column concludes with the following: The Wings’ Niklas Kronwall entered Thursday night second among defensemen in scoring with 18 points. But he scoffs at the idea he is a Norris candidate. “Stats only say so much, I think,” he said. “I know I need to be better.” He singled out one stat – his minus-3 – and said he needs to be more consistent in his own end and needs to make better decisions with the puck. “I have a few more levels to reach before I’m really satisfied,” he said.

Red Wings’ Niklas Kronwall tells Craig Custance why the NHLPA accepted NHL’s realignment proposal

Very interesting stuff: Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall spoke to ESPN's Craig Custance for an ESPN Insider blog entry, and the Red Wings' NHLPA player representative told Custance that the NHL provided the PA with multiple mock schedules which illustrated the travel teams would have to face, satisfying the players at least to the point that they chose to consent to the...

Kronwall In The Norris Hunt

Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun hand out their midseason awards and LeBrun picks Niklas Kronwall for the Norris Trophy. Kind of amazing when you have a list that doesn't include Shea Weber or Drew Doughty, but I think it's only a matter of time over the last half of the season that those guys will find their way into the conversation. Both players are playing much...

Niklas Kronwall scores with assist from backboards (Video)

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall scored a goal in Tuesday night's game against the Colorado Avalanche with an assist from the backboards at Joe Louis Arena. Kronwall deliberately sent his slapshot from near the blue line just wide of the Avalanche net, but the puck bounced hard off the backboards towards the goal crease, then off the foot of Avalanche goalie Jean...

Kindl, Emmerton score in Wings shutout win

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings have some excellent hockey players but they don't have a Steven Stamkos or a Sidney Crosby. You don't get those players when you don't have the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft, which the Wings haven't had because they've made the playoffs 21 straight seasons. Crosby and Stamkos currently lead the league in scoring....

Is Pavel Datsyuk Getting Enough Help? Answering Some Key Detroit Red Wings Questions

The Detroit Red Wings are in for another fight to the finish this season. They currently sit in the middle of the playoff race in the Western Conference, but just six points separate the third and 12th place teams. The 2013 NHL season has become very much like college football: Every single game has an impact on things. But for the Wings — and, in particular, coach Mike Babcock...

Oilers-Red Wings Preview

A fortunate bounce helped the Detroit Red Wings extend a successful stretch, but they haven't needed too much luck in recent matchups with Edmonton. The Red Wings will try to continue their dominance over the slumping Oilers in Thursday night's finale of a three-game homestand. Detroit (11-8-4) is 4-1-1 since Feb. 23, and benefited from Niklas Kronwall's unusual goal...

Mark Spizzirri: GAMEDAY: Oilers vs. Red Wings

Make sure to follow Mark on Twitter! This matchup always has special meaning for me given my long-standing allegiance to the Oilers and my father's die-hard love of the Red Wings. It goes without saying that he has enjoyed the past 20 years much more than I have, notwithstanding the 2006 playoffs and Edmonton's first round upset of the Red Wings. Nevertheless, Detroit...

Richard Cloutier: Insert Food Here

The Oilers should be hungry tonight when they face the Detroit Chicken Wings. Will they have them Buffalo style? Honey Garlic, BBQ favor? So many choices. You know for sure Pavel Datsyuk will be spicey. Now days, there's nothing much to see or to do in Detroit, so the bored Oilers might as well have something to eat while they're there. Tonight's Line-up I'm not...

Red Wings-Blue Jackets Preview

The Detroit Red Wings are starting to play better. Surprisingly, so are the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets have won a season-high three straight and have enjoyed success this season against the Red Wings heading into Saturday's matchup in Columbus. These Central Division rivals complete their season series this weekend with a home-and-home set, with Sunday's rematch...

Rapping Red Wings: Detroit Knows Blackhawks’ Streak Doesn’t Ensure Playoff Success

Peaking early. It’s one of the biggest dangers in sports, especially during the regular season. Remarkably, the Chicago Blackhawks haven’t tasted hockey adversity in three months, and naturally, they’re getting all the best headlines. But this is March, and despite all the fluff you’ve been reading and seeing on television, it dosen’t mean the Blackhawks are guaranteed...

Red Wings-Blue Jackets set-up and overnight report: second half begins; Griffins win ‘Purple Game’

The Detroit Red Wings begin the second half of their 48-games-in-99-nights demolition derby with a pair of games against the Columbus Blue Jackets today (2 PM EST, FSD/FS Ohio/97.1 FM) and tomorrow (5 PM EDT--yeah, spring forward, bleh--FSD/FS Ohio/AM 1270), and the Wings spent Friday's post-practice media availability suggesting that, all things considered, they're happy...

GDT - Game 25: Red Wings (12-8-4) at Blue Jackets (8-12-4) 2:00

Half way there, and DET are sitting in 4th. After the start to this season, who'd a thunk it?  That is the good news anyways.  In the crosstown traffic that is the WC, the Wings are only 4 points from 11th position. The problematic bit is that DET are the road warrior the rest of the month;  8 road games versus just 3 at home.  April is a little better, 7 road, 6 at JLA. ...

Howard, Red Wings top Avalanche 2-1

DETROIT (AP) -- Niklas Kronwall's shot from the blue line went wide, then caromed back off the boards just as goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere was extending his right leg. The puck bounced off Giguere's skate and into the net, giving the Detroit Red Wings a fluky but important goal. "I couldn't really find a lane through to the net, so I tried to get it somewhat close...
