The consensus in the hockey world at the moment is that Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin will not be moved before this year’s February 27 trade deadline. Nor is he being shopped, says Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. The reasons, as Jonathan Willis of the Edmonton Journal points out, are two-fold. After a 7-0-2 start, the 39-year-old has struggled to maintain a level of play that would show playoff-bound teams he would be a useful acquisition. Secondly, he carries a $3.75 million cap hit for this season and next. The SportsNet‘s HockeyCentral Trade Tracker panel also added (see video above) that there is a limited market for goaltenders, with perhaps the Chicago Blackhawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs being among a short list of teams looking for help between the pipes. Garrioch adds the Tampa Bay Lighting as another potential suitor, who may be interested in re-acquiring Khabibulin. Still, the Oilers will listen to offers for their netminder if they are pre...

With Avs Loss, Exit Varlamov

Semyon Varlamov should have cost himself the opportunity to play in net for this team for the rest of the season. As long as the Avs are in contention, his services are no longer necessay. Varlamov’s uninspired performance Tuesday night against the Edmonton Oilers was his third loss in a row. While Varlamov is not entirely responsible for the loss, he did not do a thing to help...

Dubnyk On a Roll

Oilers beat Avalanche 3-2 If nothing else, the Edmonton Oilers seem to want to keep you on your toes. Perhaps it’s a scheme devised to ensure you stay in the room and take in all of the commercials. Either way, while battling to maintain an early lead there were first NHL points, near goals and ultimately an Oilers win in this game. Continue reading "Dubnyk On a Roll"

Oilers 3, Avalanche 2

Taylor Hall scored in the third period to give Edmonton a two-goal cushion and the Oilers beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Tuesday night. Jordan Eberle and Eric Belanger also scored for the Oilers, who are 2-0-1 in their last three games after losing eight of nine. Devan Dubnyk made 31 saves. Edmonton Oilers Beat Colorado Avalanche Last Night

In their past three games, the Edmonton Oilers have garnered five out of a possible six points. These games were against San Jose, Vancouver and, last night, Colorado. Postgame Avs-Oilers: Varly lays an egg in prove-it-to-me game

Tonight’s goaltending performance by Semyon Varlamov reminded me a lot of Peter Budaj’s years with the Avalanche. In a game the team really needed to win, the goaltender – Budaj then, Varlamov tonight – couldn’t make a big save when it counted. As a result, the Avs came out of a game just like in so many with Budaj – “tough luck” losers...

Oilers recall Cornet

Blackhawks-Oilers Preview

As frustration sets in for the Chicago Blackhawks, the Edmonton Oilers are feeling confident during their best stretch in months. Chicago looks to avoid its longest road losing streak in more than eight years when it continues its nine-game trip Thursday night against the Oilers, who have won two of the first three meetings this season. The Blackhawks (29-15-7) were swept in a...

Avs lose again with Varlamov in net, this time to Edmonton Oilers, 3-2

While the Russian netminder's return to action in both teams' first game since the all-star break was far from his worst outing of the season, it nonetheless came in a losing effort for the Colorado Avalanche.

No easy way for Irsay to say goodbye to Manning

After Peter Pocklington traded hockey icon Wayne Gretzky in 1988, the one-time Edmonton Oilers owner was overwhelmed with death threats, "hundreds of them," he said from his home in Palm Desert, Calif.
