SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Avalanche flew home late last night after its 5-4 loss against the Sharks and isn’t scheduled to practice today. Thus, we probably won’t know if Semyon Varlamov or J.S. Giguere will start in goal against the Washington Capitals on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center until after the morning skate. Varlamov, of course, was acquired from Washington for a 2012 first-round draft pick, plus a second-rounder in 2012 or 2013, in a controversial trade during the free-agent frenzy period in July. The Capitals, according to The Washington Post, announced that goalie Michal Neuvirth, who backstopped Thursday’s 1-0 win at Winnipeg, will start against the Avs. He and Varlamov, both 23, competed for the No. 1 job for the previous three seasons, since each made their NHL debuts for Washington in 2008. Thanks to The Washington Post, we’ll have quotes from Neuvirth and Alex Ovechkin in our Saturday’s story. Remember the affable Matt Hendricks, a true hockey guy in every sense...
