What is it about the small town of White Rock British Columbia that produces quality NHL talent? Jason Garrison is yet another product of the small West Coast town that has made his way to the “Bigs”. But unlike some of his counterparts, Garrison did it the hard way.

Jason John Maxwell Garrison was born on November 12, 1984 in White Rock BC and although he honed his craft in the Vancouver Minor Hockey System, he didn’t do quite enough to get noticed by Major Junior Hockey League scouts or NHL scouts down the line.

Garrison instead paid his dues in the BC Junior Hockey League with the Nanaimo Clippers where he would eventually play well enough to earn a scholarship to a powerhouse college hockey program in the United States – the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Northwest Athlete Profile: Jason Garrison

During his two years in Nanaimo, Garrison made quite a name for himself. As a defenseman he recorded 27 points in 52 games his first year (2003-2004) and in his second year tallied an impressive 62 points (22 goals) in 57 games.

After his productive stint in Nanaimo, Garrison took his talents to Minnesota.

Garrison played three years at University and recorded 29 points in 87 games there.

Unable to garner attention of scouts, Garrison remained undrafted – he decided to go it alone. In 2008-2009, Garrison caught on with the Florida Panthers’ AHL affiliate the Rochester Americans and scored 35 points before signing a two-year entry level contract with the Florida Panthers on April 2, 2008.

Later that year, he made his NHL debut in an October 28th game against the St. Louis Blues.

The 2009-2010 season saw Garrison split time between the Rochester Americans and the Panthers – just 39 games and eight points with the Big Club.

The 2010-2011 season was the one that proved that Garrison could stick with the Big Boys – 73 games played and 18 points in that season.

To date, Jason Garrison remains a solid pro with defensive chops that is desirable to all NHL teams.
