Huzzah! Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is officially staying in the NHL beyond nine games with the Edmonton Oilers! This comes a complete shock given that (a) he is leading his team in scoring and (b) he flew with the team for Game No. 10 in Denver tonight and (c) his agent told Team 1260 in Edmonton on Friday that "if you look at Ryan's play or look at what the Oilers would describe as a body of work so far … he's their leading scorer. He's not going back to junior." Things were getting a little weird for The Nuge and the Oilers, who waited until game day against the Colorado Avalanche to make the call. Contrast that with the Avs revealing Gabriel Landeskog would stay earlier this week and the fanfare for Erik Gudbranson with the Florida Panthers (video celebration here), and many Oilers fans were like, "What's the holdup here?" This morning, his agent Rick Valette of Octagon told Nielsen and Chase on Team 1260 this was how he expected the process to play o...

G10 Oilers at Avalanche

I've been up all night waiting for word on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The legend of the Steve Tambellini regime continues, with all of Oiler Nation waiting for a story surrounding "the moment." Earlier in the day, we found out that one NHL rookie who was eligible to be sent back to junior found out he was staying from his coach in front of his team. Wonderful memory, the...

After two straight seasons of last-place finishes, the Edmonton Oilers want to prove they are a team on the rise. Sending the soaring Washington Capitals to their first loss of the season will certainly help their cause. Jordan Eberle had a goal and an assist and Nikolai Khabibulin made 34 saves, and the Oilers hung on to edge the Capitals 2-1 Thursday. ''It was a good...

Richard Cloutier: Outplayed, Outskilled, Outsized but Win Anyway

The Oilers are becoming a very good hockey team. Wanna know how I know? Good teams always find a way to win. Here's some Good, Bad and Ugly action for you regarding the Oilers/Capitals game: The Good - Nikolai Khabibulin was ridiculous once again. This game should have been a 6-2 win for Washington. Rapid Rewind: It's A Trap!

EDMONTON, ALBERTA - Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 34 of 35 and Jordan Eberle netted his second goal of the season for the eventual game-winner as the Edmonton Oilers took down the Washington Capitals 2-1 Thursday night inside Rexall Place.  Karl Alzner scored the lone goal for the Capitals, who fall to 7-1 on the year with their loss.  Nevertheless, Washington still leads the Southeast...

Puck Daddy chats with Nikolai Khabibulin about great start, Oilers’ young stars, old NHL goalies, Winnipeg and Phoenix

Has there been a more surprising resurgence in the NHL this season than that of Nikolai Khabibulin? Last year saw the Edmonton Oilers goaltender playing in the shadow of his DUI charges from Feb. 2010, for which he'd eventually spend 15 days in an Arizona detention facility. He played 47 games for the Oilers in 2010-11, going 10-32-4 with an .890 save percentage in an injury...

G9 Capitals at Oilers

This photo is from 37 years ago (1974, November) if I have my facts straight. Darryl Sittler is the Leaf--wearing Frank Mahovlich's number--and that's Greg Joly defending. #10 for the Caps is (I believe) Ron Anderson, he had a great mutton-chop hockey card that year. Goalie is either Ron Low or John Adams.I remember that first Capitals team for lots of reasons. Greg Joly...
