Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton was handed an eight-game suspension by the NHL for his hit on Alexei Ponikarovsky in Wednesday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Sutton was suspended without pay, which will cost him $207,317, for launching himself into Ponikarovsky. He received a minor penalty on the play.
He was considered a repeat offender after having been suspended for five games earlier in the season for his hit to the head of Colorado Avalanche rookie Gabriel Landeskog during an Oct. 28 game.
Sutton has collected three points and 50 penalty minutes this season.
