TEAMS: Columbus Blue Jackets, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins
On NHL Playoffs Eve, the league’s biggest losers come together to find out which team is going to get the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. Since the Penguins are in the playoffs and will probably get one of the last picks in the first round, the only reason we really cared about last night’s Draft Lottery was because this year’s draft happens to be at little place called Consol Energy Center.
The Columbus Blue Jackets were absolutely miserable this year and they had more than a 48% chance to win the first overall pick but they got shafted as Edmonton got the No. 1 spot after having just an 18.8% chance to win. It was the first time since the Nordiques did it from 1989-91 that one team got the No. 1 pick three years in a row.
Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is a decent GM but he’s a super nice guy so you can’t really hate on him for getting another No. 1 pick. And he doesn’t seem to have a problem following the “Pittsburgh Model.”
Brian Burke was there last night too, looking a...

For the third year in a row the Edmonton Oilers will have first pick in the NHL Entry Draft. Richard Cloutier: Oilers Get Nailed
So it's like this:
For the third year in a row, the Oilers own the 1st overall draft pick.
Nail Yakupov is the clear top prospect. He might be a smaller right-winger, but he's a goal scorer who's compared to Pavel Bure. He's going to be a 40 per season goal guy. We're talking huge talent.
Options. The Oilers have options.
We could draft Yakupov and...

K, so on Monday, the Oilers have a press conference. Was it to announce contract extensions for Tom Renney or Steve Tambellini? No. Was it to announce a player signing (or re-signing)? No. Was it to announce that Renney, Tambellini, or perhaps other people would be gone from the organization next season. Ummm, no.
Derp. What was the point?

NHL Draft Lottery Review
Today Steve Tambellini is a true believer in karma. His recent and random acts of benevolence are starting to look worthwhile – holding the door, returning the money, whatever it may be. Defying his 18.8% odds, Tambellini won the privilege to pick first overall in this year’s entry draft for the third consecutive time. Before the lottery was implemented...
