Love ‘em & Hate ‘em Yeah, the Canucks are back. In their most frustrating form. Not exactly the weekend Canucks fans were waiting on. After the worst case scenario played out Saturday night, the Canucks were thrown back into Rogers Arena for the young and hungry Edmonton Oilers. The good news: It wasn’t as bad as opening day. Technically, it was their best game of the year. The bad is, well, the final score. Thankfully, there’s 46 games left. Hopefully things go smoother. Love ‘Em 1. Kassian is a beast The biggest Canuck last night was definitely Zack Kassian, who had the type of game we’ve all dreamed he can do on a regular basis. He had his first goal of the year playing with the Sedins and followed up by pounding public enemy Ben Eager so bad that Eager is now listed day-to-day. Kassian’s gap-toothed grins were the most fun I’ve seen a Canuck have at work in a while. Cody Who? 2. Edler is a stud For the second straight game, a Canucks defenceman opened the scoring. Alex Edler‘s beauty was worth every penny of his big shiny new contract. It’s exciting to see what Edler can do with Jason Garrison by his side this year. Hopefully it’s more of that, was almost reminiscent of this. At the same time, he’s still having some trouble adjusting to the right side. There aren’t many athletes who would have handled Luongo’s situation as well as he has. 3. Luongo is dependable There aren’t many athletes who would have handled Roberto Luongo’s situation as well as he has. He’s not bitter, he’s not staying home until a trade is completed. Instead, he’s coming to the rink every day with a smile on his face ready to help the Canucks until he’s no longer a member of the team. Last night, and the game before that, was a good microcosm of recent era Luongo in Vancouver. He looked really really good but the goals he gave up were headscratchers. Seems like you can’t beat Luongo much traditionally, but you have a good chance if you just randomly throw it at the net. Hate ‘Em 1. Shootouts The Canucks are not a shootout team. It’s basically a coin flip where they’re really more likely to lose. It’s so frustrating to watch. It doesn’t help the Canucks don’t have any danglers on the time, aside from Burrows and his one deke. Then again, when you pick the type of shooters like the Canucks did last night, you’re not doing yourself any favours. 2. Dale Weise Sportsnet was plugging Dale Weise’s exploits in the Netherlands all night long, which was unfortunate because he didn’t have a great game. He got hit a few times, missed a few hits entirely, and had his big breakaway chance fall apart before his eyes. He was excited out there but it wasn’t translating into smart hockey. He might be trying to do too much after all that importance in Holland. 3. We have a goaltending controversy Internally, I can’t imagine this weekend changed anything for the Canucks’ long-term goaltending plans. Publically, however, it’s open season on the Luongo v Schneider conversation. Get ready to hear some opinions. CLICK HERE CHECK OUT THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS CLUBHOUSE TODAY ON NWSB!
