As luck would have it, the Rangers drew the Caps in the second round and they were the only team in the Eastern Conference that didn’t get a goalie scouting report prior to the start of the second season. Luckier still, at the time I was previewing the potential goaltending matchups the Rangers might run into, Braden Holtby was the third option in goal for the Caps, and not even on most fans’ radar. All that changed with a rock solid performance in knocking off the defending champion Boston Bruins, and now Holtby is very much on the radar. Same structure as always applies, general style, strengths, weaknesses and how the Rangers should approach the matchup. Let’s get to it…
General Style
This is probably the subject of a whole different post, but modern goaltending, despite a few stylistic outliers can now be classified into two camps. There are very few NHL tenders who aren’t gifted athletes at this point, one camp using that athleticism to maximize the results of an efficient...

The Washington Capitals advance — much to everyone’s surprise
How do you spell relief? D-E-F-E–N-S-E. The Washington Capitals showed their non-believers that tough-minded defensive hockey, coupled with taking the punishment associated with hanging out in front of the net can and will win hockey games. And, perhaps they showed that Coach Dale Hunter’s ‘system’ can work not only at the NHL level, but in the Stanley Cup playoffs...
Postgame: Rangers Eliminate Senators, Advance to Semis to Face Caps
And the magical season lives on.
As stated in the pregame, it was only proper that this blow-for-blow Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series between the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators was decided by a Game 7. As John Tortorella said in his postgame presser, the first round can sometimes be the most difficult. The Senators, although seeded eighth, surely gave the Rangers a...
Breaking down the goals from ECSF Game One
The Rangers opened up the series with a 301 win over the Capitals at MSG. This was one of those games that saw it all: great goaltending, offense, defense, and penalty killing. The powerplay was lacking for both sides, but that’s what happens in this kind of game.
Here’s the scoring:
1-0 Rangers
There’s not much to be said on this goal but dumb luck. Artem Anismov picked up...

Breaking Down Rangers vs. Capitals Semifinal Series
Unfortunately with the Eastern Conference Semifinals beginning just two days after the New York Rangers eliminated the Ottawa Senators in Game 7 of the quarterfinals, time is limited on what I can bring you as far as preview material goes. But thankfully there are not many secrets to be unveiled in this Rangers – Capitals second round match-up, because these two clubs have become...

Practice Notes: Dubinsky on Crutches; Boyle Progressing
Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports that Brandon Dubinsky (lower body) was not on the ice for today's optional practice, but was seen slowly getting around the Rangers' practice facility on crutches....in previous years, the possibility of losing Dubinsky long term would be a scary thought, but, to be honest, I don't think it would have that negative an affect...
Rangers 3, Capitals 1

Everybody's a winner (almost)
The New York Rangers and the New York Islanders should have a night like their prospects did as 4 prospects got to raise a trophy to the sky on Friday night.
