(via New York Daily News) During the second period of the Ottawa Senators’ 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens in the series-opening game, Habs center Lars Eller was on the receiving end of a particularly brutal hit courtesy of Senators defenseman Eric Gryba. Led by a risky zone-clearing pass from teammate Raphael Diaz, Eller was left wide open for the brutal, open ice hit. Diaz felt horribly afterward, saying, “Of course you don’t want to make passes like that. I just saw it was open. If I see the guy coming I never [make that] pass. It’s not fun when you see a teammate like that.” Eller appeared to hit his head on the ice after the collision and blood immediately began to pool underneath him on the ice. Eller was ultimately removed from the ice on the stretcher and he reportedly suffered a concussion and facial fractures that kept him the hospital overnight. And while Gryba insisted after the game he wasn’t trying to injure Eller, saying, “There was no intent to hurt him whatsoever and I hope he’s going to be okay,” he will be hearing from NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan on Friday and faces a possible suspension for the hit. Be that as it may, in light of the ugly incident, the Ottawa Sun apparently felt it had no choice but to capitalize on the gory scene and shamefully used an image of a bleeding Eller receiving treatment on the ice with the headline, “First Blood Sens.” First, additional video of the hit and the aftermath when Eller is carried off on a stretcher: Yikes. And speaking of “yikes,” here’s the aforementioned cover: You stay classy, Ottawa Sun. I would expect this from the New York Post or other big city tabloid paper but I always thought Canadian newspapers were a classier bunch. Maybe just not when it comes to their hockey.
