The New Jersey Devils apparently need to start finishing off victories before games reach shootouts if they're going to climb into one of the Eastern Conference wild-card spots.
With 10 shootout losses in as many tries this season, including their last two games, the Devils host the Florida Panthers on Monday night with hopes of picking up two points before reaching the tiebreaker. New Jersey has dropped 14 consecutive shootouts, a streak that began last March.
"Even if we were just .500 on those, we'd have an extra four or five points and we wouldn't be in this situation," forward Patrik Elias said after a 2-1 road defeat to the New York Islanders on Saturday.
The situation the Devils (31-28-15) face is a five-point gap between themselves and the final playoff spot in the East, with three teams to pass in their last eight games.
Adam Henrique's second-period goal tied Saturday's contest at 1-all. Despit...
BEST OF MAXIM
For the 12th time in his Devils career, Patrik Elias has scored 50 or more points in a season. No one is close to that franchise record, with John MacLean and Kirk Muller each doing it seven times.
Elias credits his mental approach since the Olympic break, as well as being linemates with Adam Henrique in nine of the 14 games since returning from Sochi, Russia.

The New Jersey Devils’ playoffs hopes are slowly fading (via photos.nj)
For the ninth time in 10 shootouts this season, the New Jersey Devils were shutout. This time, it came at the hands of a New York Islanders team that had 10 rookies dressed in it’s lineup including goaltender Anders Nilsson.
Dating back to last season, the Devils have now lost an NHL record 14 consecutive...
NBC's Pierre McGuire interviews New Jersey Devils forward Travis Zajac. The Former UND forward gives the University of North Dakota hockey team some love going into the Frozen Four.
Pierre Mcguire was working the New Jersey Devils-Florida Panthers game and cameras caught him and Jaromir Jagr having an in-game conversation; simultaneously creating the best Pierre GIF ever. It’s going to be fun to see what kind of photoshops come from this GIF.

It’s plausible that most – if not all – of the 14 teams that miss the 2014 playoffs will end up with “What if?” questions. Some will be deeper than others (“What if we had competent management/better players?”), yet the New Jersey Devils may find a more obvious flaw if they fall short in 2013-14. Simply put, they’ve been glaringly impotent in shootouts.
The Bruins and Claude Julien have been notorious this year for employing a three-forward one-defenseman style of play when games reach overtime. They want to end the affair before it gets to a shootout. The Bruins don't like shootouts. They'd rather take their chances with one defenseman on the ice in four-on-four play than play it safe and have the skills competition to fall...
However this season may play out, Travis Zajac vs the Florida Panthers on March 31, 2014 is going to be a game to highlight from the 2013/2014 season. Some nights, as a player, you get the bounces to go your way. Sometimes the puck is just drawn to you stick like metal to a magnet. Sometimes, the game just seems slower to you and you’re able to make those extra little moves with...
