After finishing with the fewest points in the Eastern Conference last season, the Florida Panthers are one of the NHL's biggest surprises. Perhaps just as surprising - they're atop the Southeast Division despite having gone more than six weeks without a road win. In the opener of a three-game trip, the Panthers try to avoid a seventh straight road loss Wednesday night against the struggling Colorado Avalanche. Florida (21-14-9) has never won a division title in its 18 years but owns a one-point advantage over Washington for first place. That lead could be larger if it could figure out a way to win away from home. The Panthers are 0-3-3 on the road since beating Boston 2-0 on Dec. 8. They had only six losses in their first 16 away games. Florida, which has also lost its last two visits to the Pepsi Center since a 4-1 win Jan. 2, 2003, arrives in Colorado after falling 3-2 to the Bruins in a shootout Monday.
