Tomas Kopecky broke a scoreless tie with 2:32 left and Jose Theodore stopped 40 shots as the Florida Panthers beat the Boston Bruins 2-0 on Thursday night and sent Tim Thomas to his first loss in 11 games. It was the second shutout of the season for Theodore. Thomas, who hadn't lost since Oct. 27, made 28 saves. Kris Versteeg added an empty-netter with 42 seconds left, outracing the Bruins to a loose puck and backhanding it into the net to clinch it. The Bruins dominated the scoring chances for most of the game, but Florida put pressure on Thomas in the last 5 minutes and then struck quickly when Thomas left a rebound in front of the net. Sean Bergenheim skated over the puck and missed, but Kopecky followed up and put it in. The Bruins went all of November without losing a game in regulation, but they are 2-2 in December. They have lost two in a row for the first time since since back-to-back losses to Montreal at the end of October. Since Thomas' last loss, he had allowed just 17 goals while posting three shutouts. The Bruins hadn't been shut out since the third game of the season. But they suffered from sustained bad luck, hitting the post a handful of times and failing to capitalize on chances even as they outshot Florida 40-30. Notes: It was the 101st consecutive sellout for the Bruins. ... Eight of the top 10 plus-players in the NHL were in the game, five on Boston and three on Florida. Zdeno Chara and Tyler Seguin of the Bruins entered with a league-best plus-19. ... Seguin returned from a one-game benching for missing a team meeting in Winnipeg. He played in his 100th career game, and Theodore played in his 600th. ... The Bruins announced before the game that they signed first-round draft pick Dougie Hamilton, a defenseman who was the ninth overall pick this summer.

Ty Anderson: Theodore stops 40, snaps Thomas' win streak; Sturm returns

This isn't what Claude Julien meant when he said it was time for the Bruins to start a new streak following Tuesday's loss in Winnipeg. A lost that left B's fans with a few good things to take out of losing to the Jets, and by few, I mean a couple. And by the end of the night, you were left celebrating the fact that Tim Thomas' winning streak was still very much intact...

Jose Theodore Wins 'Post Game' Award With Some Help From His Goal Frame

How unlucky can one team be? The Bruins hit the post five times and Jose Theodore stopped the rest of the 40 shots he faced on Thursday night and the Panthers stole a 2-0 win from the Bruins at the TD Garden. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette feels like this might be one of those games that sticks with you for a while. Here's hoping that Bruins fans can move past this "Post...

Top Goalie So Far This Season

Less than a week ago I picked Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings as the top goalie so far this season.  He was the best of a crowded group of top goalies in part because of the high number of saves he has had to make with the Kings.  Very quickly things have changed.  Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins has emerged as the top goalie so far this season.  Thomas has a .941...

Ty Anderson: B's pull off comeback in Columbus, lose Chara to scary looking knee injury

Riding into Columbus with a two-game losing streak, two first period tallies from the NHL's worst team weren't what Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins were looking for. Falling into an early 2-0 hole behind goals from Rick Nash and Jeff Carter, the slumping B's seemed to simply flip the switch. As easy as it appeared to be shut off over this skid. Knotting it up against...

Jose Can You See?

I love how NHL.com headlines always calls out random milestones like they actually mean something. Last night it was the immortal Jose Theodore.  What was his milestone you ask?  He was playing in his 600th career NHL game…  That’s it.  To put into perspective just how worthless and inconsiquential a milestone like that is:  He still needs 261 more starts to surpass...

Fantasy Hockey ONE (12/9)

Miller Lite invaded us...and now we are reduced to combining This Day with Fantasy Hockey ONE for your amusement and reading.  If you have ever seen the commercials where they combine two things patently into one event, one really needs to sometime.  Today's moment is a fantasy feast all in the first 20 minutes and it is an excuse for us to play a certain song as well.  Oh...

Thomas less than perfect

In the third period of last night’s 2-0 loss to the Panthers at TD Garden, Thomas booted out a Shawn Matthias shot, then placed the rebound in the net-front danger zone. Florida took advantage of Thomas’s rare misplay. Tomas Kopecky jammed the puck home at 17:28 for the game-winning goal.
