Fox Sports Florida:
SUNRISE, Fla. -- Tim Thomas's sabbatical may be coming to an end.
The Florida Panthers signed the goaltender to a personal tryout Monday. He is expected to work out with the team Tuesday in Coral Springs.
The 39-year-old opted to sit out 2012-13 season, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
"At the age of 38, I believe it is time to put my time and energies into those areas and relationships that I have neglected," Thomas wrote on his Facebook page last June. "That is why at this time I feel the most important thing I can do in my life is to reconnect with the three F's. Friends, Family, and Faith."
Thomas last played in 2011-12, one season removed from backstopping the Boston Bruins to a Stanley Cup Championship and earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Thomas won the Vezina Trophy in 2009 and 2011 as the league's top goaltender. He has accumulated four seasons with 30 or more wins. The four-time All-Star has a career .921 save percentage and 2.48 goals-against average.
Florida entered the preseason thin in net. No. 1 goaltender Jacob Markstrom enters with 31 games of NHL experience. Days before training camp began, Florida's backup netminder, Scott Clemmensen, underwent minor knee surgery. He is expected to miss at least the next two to three weeks.
That left Florida with Michael Houser, an undrafted 20-year-old who spent his first pro season with Cincinnati of the ECHL, as its No. 2.
Boston traded the goaltender to the New York Islanders in a move to free up salary and cap space on February 7.
