Pavel Datsyuk will not play in the Detroit Red Wings’ Friday night showdown with the Anaheim Ducks.
GM Ken Holland told reporters earlier in the day that one of the Wings’ forwards had suffered an injury, leading to Gustav Nyquist’s call-up. The identity of that banged-up forward was not revealed until the Wings came out for their pre-game skate.
UPDATE: Pavel Datsyuk will not play tonight (Upper-Body Injury)
— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) February 16, 2013
For now, the injury sounds as if it’s day-to-day — and the team is not letting on any more about it than that “upper-body” designation.
Detroit has been obliterated by injuries so far this season, with Datsyuk joining Todd Bertuzzi, Johan Franzen, Darren Helm, Mikael Samuelsson, Carlo Colaiacovo, Brendan Smith and Jonas Gustavsson on the list of walking wounded. When healthy, Datsyuk, Bertuzzi, Franzen, Helm and Samuelsson would make up the majority of Detroit’s top three lines.
Datsyuk played 20-plus minutes in Detroit’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Blues on Wednesday, scoring the game-tying goal in the second period. There was no indication immediately after that game that Datsyuk was ailing.
The 34-year-old center has six goals and eight assists on the year. He has been centering one of Detroit’s top two lines, while also playing extended minutes on the power play and penalty kill. Henrik Zetterberg, Justin Abdelkader, Valterri Filppula and Cory Emmerton figure to serve as the Wings’ four centers Friday.

DETROIT The hits just keep on coming for the Detroit Red Wings only in a bad way.
To this point, the Wings have been able to survive an early rash of injuries because top players Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Niklas Kronwall remained healthy.
But Friday night, Datsyuk was out of the lineup due to a yet undisclosed injury. When the team came out for warm-ups before the...
Todd Bertuzzi may be done for the season, or more seeing as how he is 38.
The Detroit Free Press reported earlier tonight that Bertuzzi had been admitted to the hospital with extreme back pain.
Bertuzzi has missed Detroit’s last three games with his chronically-injured back and, following a 5-3 win over St. Louis last Thursday, “could barely walk” according to the Detroit...
Ass barns. Now we know why the Red Wings recalled Gustav Nyquist, and the Wings did so because one of their most important players is "banged-up":
Pavel Datsyuk out for Wings tonight. Team says it's a day-to-day injury, not specified.

Gustav Nyquist is up from Grand Rapids for the Detroit Red Wings’ Friday night game against Anaheim. The reason? Well, as Chuck Pleiness reported, another Red Wings forward has suffered an injury.
Which forward? Good question.
According to Pleiness, Wings GM Ken Holland simply revealed that a forward is hurt — but would not reveal which one, leaving the mystery until Friday’s...
Rookie goalie Petr Mrazek will be back between the pipes on Sunday evening against the Minnesota Wild, MLive’s Ansar Khan reported. Mrazek made his NHL debut in a win over the St. Louis Blues on Feb. 7, then sat as Jimmy Howard made four consecutive starts — Detroit went 2-1-1 in that span, culminating in a 5-2 loss to Anaheim on Friday.
Mrazek stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced...
The Detroit Red Wings' morning skate ahead of tonight's game against the Anaheim Ducks (7:30 PM, FSD/Prime Ticket/97.1 FM) was somewhat quiet...Until we learned that the Wings have recalled Gustav Nyquist as someone Ken Holland won't name is injured up front, we found out that today's game marks Jordin Tootoo's 500th NHL appearance, that this weekend will be the...
Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk is known for his skill, but you can’t forget about how incredibly smart he is. He picked up his own rebound, looked at the net, realized he had enough space and fired it from behind the net off the back of the glove of St. Louis Blues rookie goaltender Jake Allen. Unfortunately for Datsyuk, his magic wasn’t enough as the Red Wings blew...
DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings have put forward Johan Franzen on injured reserve. They also removed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson from IR and assigned him to Grand Rapids of the AHL on a conditioning loan. Franzen has missed Detroit's last two games with a hip injury. Gustavsson was signed by the Red Wings in July and has appeared in one game for them this season....
Not good, not good. MLive's Ansar Khan wasn't able to get Red Wings GM Ken Holland name of the player who won't be able to play tonight against the Anaheim Ducks (it's on at 7:30 PM on FSD and Prime Ticket, but all of a sudden, there's confusion as to whether it will air on the NHL Network or not, so we don't know if it's gonna be blacked out for GCL and...
DETROIT You can call them the Red Wings of the future or the Grand Rapids Griffins call-ups, but it might be time for the Wings to call on them even more.
After the Wings dropped a 4-3, overtime decision to the St. Louis Blues Wednesday night, coach Mike Babcock said that he probably should have played some of the third- and fourth-line guys more.
Two of those guys, Tomas Tatar...
The Detroit Red Wings are back on the ice at Joe Louis Arena, hoping to rebound from a 4-3 OT loss to St. Louis despite facing a very, very tough task on Friday in battling the 9-2-and-1 Anaheim Ducks, who haven't played since defeating the Blackhawks 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday. I'm going to be out of the office from about 12:30-2, so if there's big breaking injury...
Per MLive's Ansar Khan, good news for one of the Red Wings' players who's nicknamed "Gus":
Wings' Jonas Gustavsson was assigned to Grand Rapids for conditioning. He'll start for Griffins on Sunday. He's been out with groin injury.

The Detroit Red Wings are preparing to face off against the Anaheim Ducks tonight (7:30 PM, FSD/Prime Ticket/and as noted by @eyesris on Twitter, the NHL Network will no longer cover tonight's game, so yay, no Center Ice/GameCenter Live blackout!/97.1 FM) , and the Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness reports that the Wings are doing so under some noticeably watchful eyes (who will...
The Detroit Red Wings face off against the Anaheim Ducks tonight (7:30 PM, FSD/Prime Ticke/NHL Network U.S.--so that means that Center Ice and GameCenter Live Online users are screwed via an NHL Net blackout yet again!/97.1 FM, and tonight is a Niklas Kronwall "Fathead Friday") facing a stiff test in more ways than one.
The 9-2-and-1 Ducks are coming off a pair of shootout...
Certainly not the third period we were looking for. The effort was there most of the night, but turnovers were the Red Wings’ undoing in this game. The Ducks scored 4 of their 5 goals off of turnovers. Yes, injuries are a problem, but our key injuries are to forwards and the problem was on defense. Howard did what he could, but there were too many turnovers to overcome.
