UNIONDALE, NY - OCTOBER 03: (L-R) Bill Guerin #13, Mark Eaton #7 and Kris Letang #58 of the Pittsburgh Penguins celebrate a third period goal against the New York Islanders at the Nassau Coliseum on October 3, 2009 in Uniondale, New York. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Kris Letang took a nasty blow to the head, breaking his nose, in the game last week against the Montreal Canadiens by Max Pacioretty.  He passed an immediate concussion test and was allowed to come back into the game and subsequently scored the winning goal in overtime.  However following the game he was flown back to Pittsburgh to be evaulated and was then determined to have a concussion.  Today he was placed on IR, but it was made retroactive back to the date of the incident which was November 26th.  Based on NHL rules a player can come off IR anytime after 7 days, which means he can come back anytime.   The Pens did this to make some roster room to call up Alexander Picard.

Big game tonight against the reigning Stanley Cup and streaking Boston Bruins.  The Bruins haven’t lost a game in regulation since October 29th.  But they haven’t faced the Penguins yet…
