If there was ever a statement game, and the Pens have made a lot of statements lately I feel like this was definitely one.  Completely punishing the very physical reigning Stanley Cup Champion Bruins is just what the Penguins did yesterday on their way to a 5-2 win and their 9th in a row.

The Penguins were up 3-0 at the end of the first period, and little did they know that that was all it was going to take, but they added two more goals for good measure.  The Bruins pulled goalie Tim Thomas from the game in the 2nd period and they started to show a tiny spark  with David Krejci putting two goals behind Marc-Andre Fleury, who still had another spectacular day.  Pascal Dupuis put the nail in the coffin for the Bruins in the 3rd period with just under 4 minutes to play when he netted the Penguins 5th goal of the day.

Pittsburgh ended their power play drought in the 1st period when James Neal scored the third goal of the game.    That goal also ended Neal’s games without a goal streak of 9 games going into Sunday.  The Penguins also kept up their dominance on the penalty kill going 2-0 again yesterday.

The Penguins are riding a definite high, playing some of their best hockey coming down the stretch.  They have a rough 3 game road stretch coming up traveling to the Rangers on Thursday, to the Devils on Saturday and then finally a stop in Philadelphia on Sunday.  With the Penguins only 4 points behind the Eastern Conference leading New York Rangers, Thursday will be a huge game for both teams.

There is no aspect of the Penguins game that isn’t clicking right now.  And with the possible return of Sidney Crosby on Thursday, and Kris Letang practicing yesterday, all signs point to the Penguins becoming even better, if that’s possible.  And for the other teams in the NHL, sadly it is possible.  For Penguins’ fans it’s hard not to be a little giddy about the possibilities.
