James Neal scored twice, Evgeni Malkin assisted on three Pittsburgh goals, and the Penguins chased reigning Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist from the net in the second period of a 6-3 victory over the Rangers in New York's home opener on Sunday night. Neal, Tyler Kennedy and Matt Niskanen all scored in the first period, and Malkin set up Pascal Dupuis in the second to push Pittsburgh's lead to 4-1 and drive Lundqvist to the bench. The Penguins, building off a 3-1 win at Philadelphia on Saturday, are 2-0 in the lockout-shortened season and haven't even played a home game. Neal added his second of the game and third of the season off another assist by Malkin to make it 5-1 at 5:06 of the third. Kris Letang added an empty-net goal with 1:52 left to close the scoring. Veteran backup Tomas Vokoun started for Pittsburgh over Marc-Andre Fleury and was solid in making 31 saves.

Philly fans return as lockout ends

The Pittsburgh Penguins needed about seven minutes to make the Wells Fargo Center as quiet as the other 29 NHL arenas the past three months with goals by Tyler Kennedy and James Neal. Despite the lockout that threatened the season, Philadelphia Flyers fans, eventually, made their presence known. This place was sold out for a 3-1 Penguins victory, one of 13 games that kicked off...

Neal stays hot as Penguins top Rangers

NEW YORK -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have come storming into the shortened season, not only starting with a pair of impressive road wins against their division foes, but creating questions for the rival New York Rangers. The Penguins dominated New York in a 6-3 win to spoil the Rangers' home opener at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, even prompting Rangers coach John Tortorella...

Which Team Selected Blake Wheeler Fifth Overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft?

The 2004 NHL entry draft consisted of a pretty impressive roster, to say the least. Russian superstars Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin went No. 1 and No. 2 overall, respectively before Canadians Cam Barker and Andrew Ladd were picked in the next two slots. American Blake Wheeler, from the University of Minnesota, was snagged with the fifth-overall pick. Which team drafted him...

John Toperzer: Pens Tuesday: Even the (3-game) losers get lucky some times

poll by twiigs.com Poll Results Question: After Sidney Crosby & Evgeni Malkin, the player the Penguins can least afford to lose is...? More than half (53 percent) of voters believe Kris Letang is the player Pittsburgh can least afford to lose after Sidney Crosby & Evgeni Malkin. “MadMike” voiced an interesting opinion, saying that “I'd actually...

RECAP: Turn off those fancy, new MSG lights. PENS WIN.

Have to find a middle ground on how to feel after this weekend. Pens start 2-0, while their division rivals the Flyers and Rangers both start 0-2. It is way too early to start jerking off about a quick start.   Normally starting off 2-0 means little. But in a 48-game season, it means something. What we as Pens fans feel right now is even better when seeing pictures...

"I think there is always a little bit...

Maple Leafs-Penguins Preview

Sidney Crosby hasn't scored yet. Evgeni Malkin either. The way the superstar duo's teammates are playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins at the moment, it hardly matters. Not with forward James Neal picking up right where he left off during his career season a year ago. Not with No. 2 goaltender Tomas Vokoun looking very much like the reliable backup Pittsburgh envisioned when...

Pens exact revenge on Flyers; win 3-1

Tyler Kennedy, James Neal, and Chris Kunitz each scored and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26 shots as the Penguins beat the Flyers 3-1 Saturday in Philadelphia. Anyone expecting a matchup similar to the circus-like six game playoff series from April left very disappointed.  Both teams had stretches of strong defensive play and both goaltenders, Marc-Andre Fleury and Ilya Bryzgalov...
