I know it seems like I have a vendetta against Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. Honestly, I don’t. But I was checking out some stats and I stumbled upon something that I just had to share with our readers. There’s a popular notion among Pens fans that Fleury is—or was—an elite playoff goalie. A quick glance at his playoff stats indicate that’s not the case. Based on the numbers the willowy Sorel, Quebec native has had one truly exceptional postseason—and that was in 2008 when we lost to Detroit in the Finals. For emphasis, here’s a table that compares Fleury’s postseason save percentage with those of the Stanley Cup winning goalies for each year dating back to his first playoff appearance in 2007. The numbers are eye-popping: Playoff Year Fleury’s Save Pct. Cup Winning Goalie Cup Winner’s Save Pct. Fleury Better or (Worse) 2007 .880 J-S Giguere, Ana. .922 (.042) 2008 .933 Chris Osgood, Det. .930 .003 2009 .908 M-A Fleury, Pit. .908 – 2010 .891 A. Niemi, Chi. .910 (.019)...

Update: Pens ink Bylsma to two-year extension

Bylsma would vault to #1 on my list if he becomes available. Update: The Penguins have extended coach Dan Bylsma, so he is now eliminated from the head coaching pool. Original Post: The Penguins were swept out of the playoffs last night, scoring just two goals against a red-hot Tuukka Rask in those four games. The Penguins were completely outmatched, despite winning the Stanley Cup...

Keep Calm and Shero On. Why the Bylsma extension makes unlimited sense.

Look, it was sink or swim. The Pens were going to either fire Dan Bylsma,or extend him.  They extended him, and it makes unlimited sense. Stability Think back to the end of the Craig Patrick era. There was no system, coaches were in and out, and basically the Penguins were like a college kid who kept overdrafting their bank account. In the Eastern Conference Finals in...

John Toperzer: To Bylsma or not to Bylsma, that is the poll question

poll by Penguin thoughts heading into the offseason @JohnToperzer -- The argument of who could possibly replace Dan Bylsma as coach doesn’t hold much water with me. Who was Dan Bylsma when HE became head coach of the Penguins? Nothing more than an unknown quantity. Sometimes the fear of the unknown keeps folks from taking chances in life and that holds...

Really, we feel you can define the whole season by the nonsense at the trade deadline, because that's how everyone is going to define it, and that's what ultimately built the team that we got for the playoffs--the team we were "ride and die" with til the bitter end. We have to wonder how much of the Bruins' fan/media jobbing is true--how much of the "...
