It took forever, but Brendan Shanahan, the NHL’s czar of discipline handed out two additional suspensions to the Pittsburgh Penguins late on Tuesday night.

James Neal was suspended for 1 game by the NHL for leaving his skates to hit two separate Flyers.

James Neal, the 40-goal scorer who took two separate runs at Flyers Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux 42 seconds apart in Game 3 will be suspended for game 4. Neal left his skates twice and clearly targeted the heads of both players. Even though he had been suspended and warned before in his career, Neal skated with only one game.

Former Flyer Arron Asham, who cross-checked Brayden Schenn in the upper chest, near his throat, then leaned down and punched Schenn as he laid on the ice

Arron Asham was suspended for 4 games for his high cross-check of Brayden Schenn. Arron Asham will miss the remainder of the 1st round of the playoffs.

was suspended for 4 games and will be out for the remainder of the series , even if it is to go 7 games.

Asham is known as a tough guy, but has never been fined or suspended in his 13 year career. I’m slightly confused as to how a guy with an extensive record who had TWO hearings because he was involved in two separate dirty hits gets to walk with a one game suspension, whereas a guy with no history and a 13 year career gets 4 games. Both offenses were outrageously dirty. But that is the new NHL. Apparently, Shanahan didn’t want the Pens to be without a 40-goal scorer for more than one game.

The Penguins will also be without Craig Adams, who was suspended for receiving an instigator penalty with less than 5 minutes left in the game. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma was also fined $10,000 for the incident under mandatory league rules.

The Flyers will attempt to close out the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Pens tonight in Philadelphia, after a series of improbable comebacks and disciplined play. The Flyers lead the series 3-0 over the heavy favorites. The Penguins were the odds on favorite to win the Stanley Cup entering this series.
