And in a not surprising ending, Evgeni Malkin scores the game winner just 1 minute and 31 seconds into overtime.  Malkin and Neal were again the force to be reckoned with.   Neal and Malkin could not compliment each other any more, Malkin had 2 assists on Neal’s 2 goals and Neal had the assist on Malkin’s overtime goal.  Kris Letang scored the first goal for the Penguins on an unassisted goal that came around behind the net after the face-off.

The first period was owned by the Penguins and showed on the score board when the Penguins went into the intermission leading the Caps 2-0.  The Penguins had 9 shots in the first period to the Capitals 4 shots on goal.  The second  period was much of the same except the dominance was from the Capitals.  They had 10 shots on goal to the Penguins 5 shots.    The Capitals got on the board 11 minutes into the second period after a couple penalties by the Penguins.   And Capitals’ Semin tied up the game 3 minutes later.

The third period didn’t start great Alexander Ovechkin scored just a minute into the period to give the Capitals the lead.  Not to worry though because the NHL’s best line came through yet again.  James Neal put one in the net just 6 minutes later.  The score remained tied at 3 for the remainder of the period.    And just like all the other clutch performances Evgeni Malkin has given us recently he picks up a rebound off a James Neal shot and at a virtually impossible angle puts it into the net.  Malkin has been quite a force and has pulled further ahead with his 3 points today for the lead in points in the NHL.

After the Penguins lost 6 in a row and things were looking not so good, they come back and put together an impressive 6 straight wins.  The Penguins next play the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday who have won 8 of their last 9 games, and then follow that up with back-to-back games against Toronto.

Penguins Malkin continues to shine during win streak

The Pittsburgh Penguins squandered a 2 goal lead at home Sunday, only to have Evgeni Malkin save the day……again.  It’s becoming a regular occurrence in Pittsburgh to have #71 will his team to victory.  In fact, on the Pens recent 6 game win streak you could argue that he is responsible for, well, all of them.  In all seriousness, he has played more than a significant role...

Among our Hart Trophy finalists were Claude Giroux, Jonathan Toews and Henrik Lundqvist. We also made a brief mention of Evgeni Malkin. Fast forward three weeks later, and it's the easiest...

Stars, Alex Goligoski agree to 4-year, $18.4 million extension

When the Dallas Stars dealt forward James Neal to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Alex Goligoski last February, both teams were using a surplus to fill a need. While Neal struggled after coming over to the Penguins and is now blossoming, Goligoski has been a steady presence on the Stars' blueline contributing 15 points in 23 games last season and after dealing with a broken...
