On Saturday evening, the Adirondack Phantoms faced off against the Connecticut Whale, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, at the MSG Training Center in Tarrytown, NY. This was the third and final preseason game for the Phantoms. The Phantoms came into the game with a preseason record of 0-2.
The Phantoms lineup included 3 Marc-Andre Bourdon, 5 Danny Syvret, 9 Rob Bordson, 10 Brayden Schenn, 13 Zack Fitzgerald, 14 Sean Couturier, 15 Andrew Johnston, 16 Tye McGinn, 20 Cullen Eddy, 22 Eric Wellwood, 24 Harry Zolnierczyk, 25 Matt Ford, 26 Zac Rinaldo, 27 Garrett Roe, 28 Brandon Manning, 36 Erik Gustafsson, 38 Jason Akeson, 43 Sergei Sentyurin and goalie 33 Scott Munroe.
Scott Munroe got the start for the Phantoms and Jason Missiean for the Whale.
The first period was a rather physical one, in which four penalties were taken. Three of them belonged to Connecticut, but neither team capitalized on their powerplay opportunities. Sean Couturier had two quality scoring chances, but fired wide on both.
Scott Munroe was tested early in the second period as he saved a Chris Kreider breakaway. Shortly after, Andrew Yogan was able to jam in a rebound to give Connecticut a 1-0 lead.
Brayden Schenn had a breakaway of his own, but missed wide. However, he did make up for that on the powerplay when he scored top shelf from the point. His game-tying goal was assisted by Couturier and Gustafsson.
The third period began with the game tied 1-1. Phantoms forward Garrett Roe was hit with a high stick and left with the trainer, but luckily he is alright. Brayden Schenn had a terrific scoring chance as he dove to slam home a rebound, but was denied by Jason Missiean.
Late in the third, a Phantoms defenseman was forced to pull down J.T. Miller and he was awarded a penalty shot. Munroe stood strong and denied Miller to keep the game tied.
With 34.3 seconds left, Chad Kolarik scored on a rebound to give the Whale the lead late in the third. To seal the deal, Chris Kreider, who spent time with the Rangers last season, scored on the empty net.
This game came down to a battle of the goalies. While both goalies had pretty good games, Jason Missiean was the better of the two. He made some pretty phenomenal saves that could've easily been goals.
The Phantoms finished their preseason play with a record of 0-3.
The team will travel back to Glen Falls tomorrow, and their training camp will continue at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Tuesday. They open the season on Saturday, October 13 against the Portland Pirates.
