A veteran forward is being forced to pay up.

In a Friday release from the National Hockey League, Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway was fined $2,000 for supplementary discipline under NHL Rule 64, which concerns diving/embellishment.

The incident in question came during a game between the Flyers and Boston Bruins on March 23, when Hathaway hit the ice after getting entangled with Bruins’ defenseman Andrew Peeke in the third period.

There was no penalty called on the play.

The reason why Hathaway was fined was because it was his second citation for embellishment this season. Back on Jan. 2 against the Edmonton Oilers, Hathaway was issued a warning following an incident that was flagged by NHL Hockey Operations.

This is not the first time the Naples, Florida native has been fined by the league. In fact, Hathaway has been fined at least once in each of the last three seasons. During the 2019-20 season, while with the Washington Capitals, he was suspended three games for spitting on Erik Gudbranson, then a member of the Anaheim Ducks.

Hathaway has scored seven goals and seven assists through 74 games of his first season with the Flyers. He signed a two-year contract with Philadelphia on July 1, 2023, with an AAV of $2.375 million. Hathaway came to the Flyers after finishing last season with the Boston Bruins following a trade with the Capitals in February.

In 531 career games, Hathaway has scored 65 goals and 71 assists, including six points in 31 playoff games.

The Flyers (36-28-10) are fighting to stay in the playoffs. As of Friday, they are third in the Metropolitan Division, 20 points behind the first-place New York Rangers, but are only one ahead of Washington, who sits fourth.
