Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds had goals and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 33 shots to help the Philadelphia Flyers defeat the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on Saturday. The win gave the Flyers a .500 record for the first time this season, at 11-11-1. Philadelphia has won five of its last seven games. Marc Methot scored for the Senators, who lost in regulation for the first time since Feb. 16. Goalie Ben Bishop had won his last four starts for Ottawa (12-7-3), posting 1.69 goals-against average during the stretch. But the Senators have had trouble scoring on the road and struggled to get quality chances against the Flyers. The Flyers started slowly, trapped in their own zone but the Senators were unable to take advantage. A hard hit on Senators defenseman Mike Lundin by winger Harry Zolnierczyk midway through the first period resulted in a five-minute major and game misconduct. Zolnierczyk appeared to leave his feet for the hit, which will automatically be reviewed by the league. Lundin did not return to the game. After a scoreless first period, the Flyers made it 1-0 at 7:24 on Voracek's team-leading ninth goal. He powered past the Senators defense to cut toward the net and beat Bishop. Simmonds added his goal 4 minutes later, taking a pass from Brayden Schenn to beat Bishop and give the Flyers a 2-0 lead. Bishop stopped 39 of 41 shots. Methot scored at 14:11. Ottawa was careless in the third period, taking several penalties. Daniel Alfredsson received a five-minute major and game misconduct for crosschecking Rinaldo at 12:29 of the third period. A later penalty resulted in a 2-minute Flyers 5 on 3, but the Senators were able to keep it a one-goal game. The Flyers then killed off a late 6-on-4 power play for the Senators after they pulled Bishop to hold on for the win.

Bryzgalov fixes error on 'Star Wars' mask

A disturbance in the Force has been corrected. Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov has fixed his Star Wars-themed mask, changing the color of Yoda’s lightsaber to green after a mini-outcry erupted around its original orange shade. The reddish color would have implied that Yoda had gone over to the dark side; instead, balance in the universe has been restored. Look at the mask you may...

Simon Gagne: A Boon for Flyers’ Third Line

(photo courtesy of Center Ice Philly Magazine) After being drafted by the Flyers almost fifteen years ago, spending ten seasons in the City of Brotherly Love, a short stint in Tampa, and a Stanley Cup Championship in Los Angeles, Simon Gagne has found himself wearing the orange and black once again. In return for just [...]

Danny Briere, Sean Couturier and the Philadelphia Flyers Quandary at the Forward Position

By Dustin Leed (@D_LEED) Photo by Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images The curious case of Danny Briere provides a simple proposal, really. Does Danny Briere really fit with the Philadelphia Flyers? The simple, far less cumbersome answer: no. Easier said than done. When the prized free agent from the 2007 offseason signed a massive eight-year, $52-million dollar contract with the Flyers...

The Worst Hockey Fight Ever

This would absolutely be the worst fight in the history of professional hockey…if a punch was actually thrown.  Since this was more like a display from figure skating’s doubles division, I’m not sure what to call this. This, eh, exhibition took place in the North American Hockey League between Francis Lessard of the Cornwall RiverKings and Sebastien Laferrier of the Sorel...

Tim Panaccio: HUMONGOUS Week Ahead for Flyers

Been a while since the Flyers got to Carnival Sunday having WON the day before. They almost always lose the day before the Flyers' Wives Fight for Lives Carnival. Almost a given. Peter Laviolette doesn't believe in historical relevancy but there is such when it comes to the Flyers and their "third" month of the schedule. Usually, that is December and it&...

Flyers Forward Harry Zolnierczyk Suspended Four Games for Hit on Senators Defenseman Mike Lundin (Video)

The Shanahammer has dropped again, and it will be costing Harry Zolnierczyk four games’ pay. That the number of games the Philadelphia Flyers forward has been suspended by NHL safety honcho Brendan Shanahan after a reckless hit on Senators defenseman Mike Lundin. Zolnierczyk left his feet to deliver a brutal hit on Lundin during Saturday’s game in Philadelphia, for which he...

Sestito Claimed, Flyers Sign Two Prospects

Just a few weeks ago we were celebrating Tom Sestito's two goal performance in a win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Yesterday the Flyers placed the winger and goaltender Michael Leighton on waivers. While Leighton did clear waivers, Tom Sestito was claimed by the Vancouver Canucks. Leighton will head to Adirondack. The Flyers also announced that they have signed their 2nd round...

Flyers’ Harry Zolneirczyk Takes Out Ottawa’s Mike Lundin

CSNPhilly.com There is (way too early) afternoon hockey happening in Philadelphia on Saturday, as the Flyers take on the Ottawa Senators at the Wells Fargo Center. Ottawa defenseman Mike Lundin doesn’t have to worry about staying alert for the rest of the game. He’s taking a nap courtesy of the Flyers’ Harry Zolneirczyk. ...

Dee Karl: No Sequester Talk with these Senators Game Day

Evgeni Nabokov will be in net today when the Isles face the Ottawa Senators. But if you thought anyone else would have been, you're foolish. The troubling thought is that John Tavares may not be playing this afternoon as he has been feeling ill since Friday. My personal opinion is -- if he's sick, don't let the kid play. He has a better chance of getting hurt if...

Senators-Flyers Preview

After a slow start to the season, the Philadelphia Flyers are starting to pick up steam. They're surely feeling good about their chances of keeping things going with Simon Gagne back in town. The Flyers aim for a fifth win in seven games Saturday in their first meeting of the season with the visiting Ottawa Senators, who could again be without the injured Craig Anderson. While...

Harry Zolnierczyk Suspended

Brendan Shanahan has made a ruling regarding Philadelphia Flyers winger Harry Zolnierczyk and his hit on Mike Lundin Saturday afternoon. Zolnierczyk has been suspended four games for charging. Shanahan explains in the video (below) that, "Instead of delivering a hard, legal check, he (Zolnierczyk) launches prior to the check making significant contact to Lundin's head....

Travis Yost: GAMEDAY: More Afternoon Hockey on Long Island

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- Having dropped consecutive games in Boston and Philadelphia, the Ottawa Senators are looking for a cure to what ails their recent road woes. They'll attempt to break the brief slide on Long Island Sunday afternoon against a NY Islanders team (8-11-2) that's struggled through the first leg of this 48-game season. Ottawa is in...

The Way It Is

Today the NHL announced a four game suspension to Flyers forward Harry Zolnierczyk for a hit on Ottawa Senator Mike Lundin. The hit was borderline as Zolnierczyk slightly left his feet at the last second to nail Lundin, who left the game with a concussion. Some Flyers fans are surprised with the length of the [...]
