It was announced today that the Phoenix Coyotes have agreed to terms with their all star defenseman Keith Yandle on a new 5-year contract.

The terms of the deal were not announced, but it is rumored that the 5-year deal is worth upwards of $26 million. Yandle, who is only 24, has emerged as one of the NHL’s best defensemen in his 5 years in the league. He is an excellent two-way player, excelling in the offensive zone as a quaterback at the point. He is also a force on the power play, as he led the Coyotes with 26 power play points.

Last year the all-star had 59 points, good for second on the Coyotes and third highest of any defenseman in the league. This was Yandle’s best season to date.

With the departures of Ed Jovanovski and Ilya Bryzgalov, it will be up to Keith Yandle to take a leadership role on defense. The young defender will be more than up to the challenge.
