Eric Hartzell 29. Tristan Jarry 30. Matt Murray 35. Sean Maguire SESSION ONE NOTES The forwards and defensemen have separate practices today. The forwards went through some passing drills to begin the practice where one forward went in the middle of the ice and passed the puck to four other forwards on the blue lines. The player in the middle then had to stickhandle through different objects and take a shot at the goaltender. Tom Kuhnhackl scored a nice goal in the drill where he took a shot at Tristan Jarry. After the puck hit Jarry, Kunhackl hit the puck in mid-air and it went in. Later on, Kunhackl took a hard pass that was at his skates and kicked it to his stick, just like Sidney Crosby does. The next drill forced every forward to take a hard pass, stickhandle through an object, and shoot the puck on net, Dominik Uher sniped one after taking a hard pass from another forward in the neutral zone. For the first time this week, Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma was on the ice for practice. Bylsma had been watching from the seats the past three days. Adam Payerl continues to impress at this camp. In a rebound drill where one forward shoots the puck at the goaltender to get a rebound for the other forward, Payerl simply put the puck in the net himself. No rebound. The guys got a laugh out of it. The forwards participated in a drill where they had to protect the puck in the corner. Guess who was on their back? Bill Guerin and Bylsma. Jarry got hit with a hard shot in the collarbone area and left the ice. The team’s 2013 second-round pick did not return. He stayed one the ice for a few minutes, but then elected to go back to the locker room. Matia Marcantuoni knocked the water bottle out of the net after taking a shot in front of the goal. There is not much NHL experience on the blue line for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this year. Phillip Samuelsson is probably the most experienced. Therefore, the team needed a veteran to anchor the defense. The Penguins may have gotten him today as they signed Brendan Mikkelson to a two-way deal. Mikkelson, 26, has played in 131 total NHL games in his career with Tampa Bay, Calgary, and Anaheim. You have to keep in mind that many of these defensemen are still two to three years away from the NHL. They will need some time to develop. Olli Maatta continues to get great reviews from the coaching staff and the media. He definitely looks like the defenseman with the most potential of the group. He makes skating look so easy and is really strong with the puck. I can tell he is much more confident at this point this year than he did last year. As far as being NHL ready, Brian Dumoulin seems to be the closest. Most of the drills in today’s session focused on skating and passing. Shortly after, the defensemen took a bunch of shots from the point. Derrick Pouliot made it look easy, as he should. Pouliot is projected to become a power play quarterback.  PHOTOS LOCKER ROOM AUDIO Brian Dumoulin Olli Maatta Tom Fitzgerald Alain Nasreddine Matia Marcantuoni
