Mark Eaton was a solid pick-up for the New York Islanders this off-season, and was doing what was expected of him up until his season ending hip injury.

The 34-year-old Eaton was supposed to come in and be a leader on the defensive half of the ice, and he did that well as an assistant captain.

He was not on the ice to score goals, as the only points he registered were three assists. Instead Eaton was out there for his defensive skills, and he did pretty well with that, finishing at only minus two. This is despite a pretty poor record in the games he played.

Eaton has had a relatively successful NHL career, and should still have some gas left in him. The question is going to be whether he is able to bounce back from this hip injury and compete against a lot of the younger defensemen on the Islanders’ roster. They need veteran leadership somewhere, and Eaton can offer that at the blue-line.
