This advice applies to the negotiations between NHL general managers as well. GMs rarely show their hands and they sometimes use media sources to spread false rumors as a screen to allow them to make their desired moves.
In recent history, there were strong trade winds linking the Philadelphia Flyers to the Toronto Maple Leafs in regards to now former Flyer, Jeff Carter. The Flyers used the leverage that they created with the Leafs rumors and acquired the rights to Jakub Voracek (who, in my opinion, is becoming an above-average passer) as well as the rights to the number eight pick in the 2011 draft (Sean Couturier, who needs to be kept in mind for the Calder Trophy).
