The Washington Capitals have agreed to a two year contract extension with veteran D Tom Poti. Poti has been the most solid defensemen for the Capitals since his arrival via free agency in 2007.
The extension is for a total of $5.75 million broken down to $3 million in 2011-12 and $2.75 million in 2012-13.
Poti, along with Mike Green and Jeff Schultz are roster locks. The Capitals are planning to carry 7 defenseman this season compared to the usual 8 defenseman. That leaves 4 spots open and two of them will likely go to the Caps two first rounders, Karl Alzner (2007) and John Carlson (2009). John Erskine and Tyler Sloan, the other two holdover defenseman, will vie for the final two spots.
