THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… The Washington Capitals killed a late John Carlson penalty.  Carlson went to the sin bin with a little over four minutes remaining in the game with a one goal lead.  Sure, the ‘Canes had opportunities after the penalty was over, but that penalty kill was huge and gave the Caps momentum in the final two minutes. OUR GAME MVP… Easy.  His name is Nicklas Backstrom.  Backstrom put up a 4 assist night and took the NHL lead in assists.  To give you a bigger image of the DC assist machine, he has 12 assists over his last 5 games and 14 assists in the month of December.  The four assist game gave the Capitals the NHL leader in goal scored (Ovechkin) and assists (Backstrom).  Backstrom provided assists on all four goal scored, including adding three more power play helpers.  Eight of his last twelve assists have come on the man advantage.  This was not an easy decision.  Goalie Phillip Grubauer was slightly behind Backstrom.  He made a whopping 39 saves on 41 shots and was easily a critical component to the Capitals win.  However, we have a hard time passing up a four point night. THE GOOD… The Caps Power Play.  That is pretty damn easy.  It was the difference maker.  The Caps have four man advantage opportunities and converted three of them.  All three of Washington’s power play tallies came in the second period and shifted the lead back to the Caps.  Even more impressive, none of the three goals we’re scored by the NHL power play scoring leader, Alex Ovechkin.   The Caps got power play tallied from Marcus Johansson, John Carlson, and Troy Brouwer. THE STUD … Was Phillip Grubauer in goal.  Gruby made 39 big saves and saved the Caps’ butts late in the game with some tough, nifty saves.  He was right up there for us with Nicklas Backstrom for MVP of the game.  Grubauer is not only making a case to stay up at the NHL, but to stay in the net as starter.   Grubauer improved tonight to 4-0-1 and had a .951 save percentage, stopping 39 of 41 shots in goal.  Caps can’t possibly content to carry three goalies.  Decisions are going to need to be made and as long as Grubauer continues to play like this, you would think that Neuvirth will be standing on the trading board. THE HISTORIC MOMENT… In the last minute of the game, when Alexander Ovechkin iced the game for the Caps and scored his 29th goal of the season.  That goal was Ovechkin’s 400th goal of his career, making him the 89th player in NHL history to score 400 or more goals.  Kudos to Ovechkin on a fine night, that included his 400th goal, an assist, a hit, and 5 shots on goal. THE FIGHTS… No fights tonight. THE MISSING IN ACTION… The Caps are carrying three goalies on the roster.  Michal Neuvirth has returned from injury, but Phillip Gurbauer has played so well, that Adam Oates has carried three goalies tonight.  They can’t continue that way.  Neuvirth was the healthy scratch tonight.  Joining Neuvirth as scratches were Alex Urbom and Casey Wellman. MULTIPOINT SCORERS… Nicklas Backstrom was the leader, factoring into all four Washington goals with four assists.  Troy Brouwer was credited with a goal and an assist.  Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist. THE RECORD … This was a big win for the Capitals against a bitter Metropolitan and former Southeast Division rival in their arena.    With the win, the Caps improve to 19-13-3 and to within 11 points of Pittsburgh.  They also pull five points ahead of third place  Philadelphia.

Capitals Martin Erat still waiting for trade

It’s been nearly a month since he went public with his trade request, but Martin Erat remains a Washington Capital. And now that the NHL’s holiday roster freeze is in effect, the veteran winger is guaranteed to stay through 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 28 at least. Nothing has changed for Erat over these past few weeks. He still wants to be traded but knows there’s little he can do...

Ovechkin scores 400th goal in Washington 4-2 win over Carolina

The Washington Capitals don’t want to rely exclusively on their power play for offense, but every once in a while it’s not such a bad thing. The Capitals recorded three power-play goals in the second period Friday night to surge past Carolina for a 4-2 win at PNC Arena, a victory made even more special when Alex Ovechkin sealed it with an empty-net tally for his 400th goal with...

Patience Is a Virtue: Braden Holtby and Washington Goaltenders

Braden Holtby's poor December has fans and seemingly the staff quickly turning on him. (Caps.com) Seven. That’s the number of men who have started a game in nets for the Capitals since franchise icon Olie Kolzig left the team five and a half seasons ago.  Their names: Brent Johnson, Jose Theodore, Semyon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth, Tomas Vokoun, Braden Holtby, and now...

Hurricanes fail to convert chances in loss to Capitals

RALEIGH, N.C. -- On a night when nothing seemed to come easy for the Carolina Hurricanes, it seemed somehow appropriate that the Washington game-sealing goal was an empty-netter. Alex Ovechkin scored his 400th NHL goal against an empty net to make it 4-2 at the 19:35 mark of the third.  It was a tale of two very different power plays coming into the game, but not so much during...

Devils-Capitals Preview

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom are major reasons why the Washington Capitals' power play has been surging. Neither has mustered much the last three times they have seen Martin Brodeur. Brodeur will likely start Saturday night for the New Jersey Devils when they try to end the Capitals' three-game home win streak. Washington (19-13-3) has seen its power play go 9 for...

Rapid Rewind: Be-Deviled

Oof. (NJ.com) The Washington Capitals let one get away on Saturday night at Verizon Center, falling to the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in overtime.  After falling behind 1-0 late in the first period, the Caps got three goals in a row in the second period to take a two-goal lead in to the final period.  But the Devils fought back, getting a goal to make it 3-2 and then 4-3 after Alex...

Caps GM is happy Wilson ‘was vindicated’ by lack of suspension

The Washington Capitals have made adamant statements that Tom Wilson delivered a clean hit on Brayden Schenn on Tuesday. Capitals-Hurricanes Preview

The Washington Capitals suffered a regulation loss their last time out, a rarity for them of late. They'll try to get back on track in a matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, the team that had dealt them their previous defeat in regulation. The Capitals look to avoid their third loss in as many matchups with the Hurricanes this season when the Metropolitan Division rivals meet...

Andy Greene goal gives Devils 5-4 win over Capitals in overtime

The superstars did not disappoint. Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 30th goal and Jaromir Jagr scored the 694th of his career to tie Mark Messier for seventh on the NHL’s all-time list. But it was a player who seems to get little notice and not enough respect — both in the NHL and from USA Hockey officials — who made the timely plays that lifted the Devils into sole...
