Los Angeles Kings
LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Kings still aren't playing like the defending Stanley Cup champions, and the Nashville Predators continue to struggle to score goals. In other words, the perfect recipe was in place Thursday night for a game short on offense and high on frustration for two teams still trying to find their way through the early part of the new season. No surprise, then, that the Kings and Predators needed overtime and a shootout at Staples Center after grinding their way through regulation, with Nashville ultimately prevailing 2-1 after outscoring the Kings 4-3 in the shootout. Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne denied Simon Gagne and then Sergei Kostitsyn scored on Kings goalie Jonathan Quick to give Nashville its first shootout win of the year. For the Kings, it was a bitterly frustrating loss considering they outshot the Predators 24-14 through regulation and overtime but had nothing to show for it other than Dustin Brown's first-period goal. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Sergei Kostitsyn scored in the eighth shootout round, and the Nashville Predators snapped their three-game skid with a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
Pekka Rinne made 23 saves and stopped five of Los Angeles' eight shootout attempts as the Predators survived a weak offensive performance thanks to their Finnish goalie's sturdiness...
Returning with, for all intents and purposes, the same lineup that finished with the fifth-most points in the NHL last season and advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Nashville Predators figured to have a leg up on the competition in a shortened season preceded by only a week of training camp.
So much for conventional wisdom.

PennerPoint™ was a huge success for this blog last season... a success in the sense that I didn't have to give out that many free t-shirts to people who correctly guessed which period and at what time of that period Dustin Penner would score his 1st goal of that game. We thought that after Dustin Penner scored one of the greatest goals...
Leave it to Ducks Coach Bruce (Gabby) Boudreau to wax poetic about his team's season series against the Kings.
"It's a rivalry and it's for Southern California. It's for Southern California bragging rights," Boudreau said. "I mean, I know as a person I don't like to see them on top and then every time you go outside they're flaunting it at...
Two struggling teams fought well into the night in order to decide this one.
The Los Angeles Kings were 2-2-1 coming into the night while the Nashville Predators had only won once in their six games. Something had to give.
With 18,118 inside Staples Center looking on, Pekka Rinne got his first victory of the 2012-13 season in the Preds’ 2-1 shootout victory.

Today, February 2, 2013, we pay our respects to William Grundy, a long time Nashville Predators fan, a member of the Nashville Sports Council and a member of Cellblock 303. The Lipscomb University graduate lost his battle with cancer this past Tuesday.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Grundy’s friends, family, and seatmates.

The Nashville Predators were finally able to win a game in the shootout. It took four attempts, but they finally did, this time on the Los Angeles Kings. It took eight shooters each side to score. Pekka Rinne came up big when he had to. Sergei Kostitsyn was the shootout game winner dekeing Jonathan Quick out of position.
Brandon Yip and Dustin Brown had the lone goals of the...
Although Pekka Rinne is an elite NHL goalie by any measure, he had to wait six games and eight shootout rounds to earn his first victory of the season for the low-scoring Nashville Predators.
If that's the type of season he's facing, Nashville's sturdy Finnish goalie will keep trying to carry his teammates past the Los Angeles Kings and the rest of the West.

The Los Angeles Kings are succeeding in limiting their opponents offensively. Their own offense just hasn't been good enough to take full advantage.
They'll look to break through Saturday night when they visit the Anaheim Ducks, who struggled to shut down their Southern California rivals while losing five of six meetings last season.

The Predators had to stretch the games to eight rounds of the shootout, but Nashville finally prevailed, grabbing a 2-1 shootout win over the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings.

The Nashville Predators are needing a “Rocky”-esque comeback to this road trip to begin turning their season around. The Predators are 1-2-3 on the year and one of only four teams with one win (Calgary, Washington and Florida-all at the bottom of the standings). The L.A. Kings are 9th in the West, one place above Nashville, and have...
