NHL reporter Darren Peng broke news on Twitter this evening that the Nashville Predators have fired Assistant Coach Peter Horachek. The coach had been with the organization since 2003 and was with the AHL affiliate in Milwaukee before that. Prior to the Preds organization, Horachek was director of hockey operations of the Nashville Knights. Before coaching, Horachek also played hockey and was captain of the Saginaw Genirals.
Horachek and Trotz have been behind the bench for a while which makes this a very interesting decision for the head coach. Traditionally it is the head coach that manages the firings of other coaching staff and unless revealed otherwise it is safe to assume that that is the case tonight.
A shake up behind the bench might be in the Preds best interests. After a lackluster season that proved offensively frustrating throughout. In searching a replacement, the coaching staff and hockey operations management could seek a offensively minded assistant to counter balance Trotz's defense heavy system.
With that being said, it is likely that the pressure to succeed next season will lie firmly on Trotz's shoulders, and further failure could lead to the head coach's departure.
Horachek will likely find more work in the NHL. He has an impressive resume and could see himself in a head coaching position in the near future. There are currently vacancies in the league, notably in Dallas.
The official Press release should come by mid afternoon tomorrow.
