Cedar Park, TX—The Texas Stars scored a pair of third period goals to break a scoreless tie and take a 2-0 win over the Admirals in game three of their best-of-five Western Conference Quarterfinals series Wednesday night. The loss spoiled another sterling effort for Ads goalie Magnus Hellberg, who stopped 29 shots and saw his shutout streak snapped at 107:42. The Stars outshot the Ads 15-6 in the first period and applied early pressure to the Admirals defense by recording the game’s first five shots on goal. However, Hellberg denied each Texas attempt and the two teams were scoreless after one. The second period was a role reversal of the first as Milwaukee carried the play and outshot the Stars 7-4, but still neither team could find the back of the net and it was a scoreless game after 40 minutes of play. Just sent down from Dallas earlier in the week, Alex Chiasson put the Stars up 1-0 at 7:42 of the third. Texas forward Justin Dowling carried the puck down to the goal line and th...

What went right and wrong in Stars' season

Now that the Dallas Stars' shortened 2013 season is in the books, it's time to dissect what went right, what went wrong and what is promising heading into the start of the Jim Nill era as the club's general manager. THE GOOD The Play of Kari Lehtonen in Net The numbers might not illustrate it, but it was overall another solid year for Kari Lehtonen between the pipes...

Hellberg went from back-up to Calder Cup Playoffs starter…

When he heard his name, he wasn’t even paying attention. “When I got drafted, I thought they would say my new team, Frölunda,” Magnus Hellberg told us with a smile. “But they said my old one, Almtuna. So I didn’t connect at the beginning. But then I was like ‘Hey! That’s me!’” The general consensus in 2011 (and most years, really) was that the main need for the...

Dallas Stars Hire GM Jim Nill

One significant story I haven't written about yet that occurred at the end of the regular season is the change in general managers in Dallas.  Joe Nieuwendyk was fired.  He was hired in 2009 and never managed to qualify for the playoffs.  He was a prime example of a star player who was rushed into a position above his qualifications and struggled there.  In fact when he was...

Dallas Stars desperately needed new leadership

Joe Nieuwendyk never got the Dallas Stars back into the playoffs. This is why he is no longer general manager of the once-mighty franchise.“I’m very proud of what we accomplished,” he told the Dallas Morning News. “I know you get measured on getting to the playoffs and challenging for Stanley Cups, but I feel we’ve made a lot of progress in four years. I feel good about...

2013 Season Review: The (Original) Top-Six Forwards

Jamie Benn It was a bit of a weird year for everyone’s favorite future captain. Benn missed the first five games of the season due to his contract issues and arrived on the team without having played with Jaromir Jagr or Ray Whitney, guys he would center for much of the year. Those chemistry issues were quickly put to rest, mostly due to Jagr’s ability to click with his...

Bag of Pucks: Nill in, Nieuwendyk out for Stars

It was a bizarre night on Saturday evening when the Stars were playing out the string against Detroit in an arena full of red and equally of defeat for anyone who loves hockey in Dallas. For what seems like the umpteenth time in a row, the Stars fight and claw and come up short. Actually, it was only the 5th season in a row, but after they spoiled us by showing success virtually...

Admirals shutout and lose Game 3

The Milwaukee Admirals find themselves facing elimination Friday after a 2-0 loss to the Texas Stars Wednesday night. Recently reassigned by the big brother club Dallas Stars, Alex Chiasson scored the game winner 7:42 in the third off a redirection in front. With 6:03 remaining, Kevin Connauton put the icing on the cake to score his second goal of the series on the power...

Preds sign 2012 sixth round pick Marek Mazanec…

In a move that could pave the way for Magnus Hellberg to move to the big club, the Nashville Predators have signed 2012 sixth round pick Marek Mazanec to a two-year entry level deal. Mazanec backstopped HC Plzeň to the Czech Extraliga Championship this past season. Hellberg has grown leaps and bounds this season with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals. So much so that the brass may...

PRESS RELEASE: Admirals season comes to an end

Cedar Park, TX—Kevin Henderson scored the lone goal for the Admirals as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Texas Stars on Friday night and lost their Western Conference Quarterfinal Series three games to one. Milwaukee managed just one goal in the final two games in what became the lowest scoring series (12) in Admirals playoff history.   Texas got on the board first when Matt...
