Editors’ Note: Noted Philadelphia Flyers fan John Saquella is going beyond 140 characters. The man most of you probably know from social media as @jsaquella will bring you his wide-ranging opinion and commentary on the Orange and Black in his column Putting On The Foil. By John Saquella (@jsaquella) The Fourth Line I really dislike the 4th line when the Flyers dress both Jay Rosehill and Zac Rinaldo. Part of it is my admitted anti-goon bias. We’ve gone over that enough times, and I will try no to rehash it here. Unfortunately, Rinaldo’s progress last season seems to have slipped. Last season, Rinaldo was drawing more penalties than he was taking, and often, when he did take a “bad” penalty, it was more the result of his reputation than his actual action. Quite a few times the boards shook with a legal hit, and the ref saw it was Rinaldo and raised his arm. He’s always going to have to deal with that, so he needs to be smarter. Thus far in 2013-14, he simply hasn’t been. In a couple...

Max Talbot Blogs About Injury in French, Here’s the Translated Version

After a gruesome injury in the Flyers’ 2-1 win over the Rangers last Thursday, Max Talbot skated off the ice while Flyers fans held their breath. However, it seems he was lucky — or just very good at instincually protecting himself. As Talbot explains, he shockingly did not  suffer a concussion, and only missed time to recover from a messed up nose and some muscle aches. You...

Divine Intervention May Be the Cause of the Flyers’ Recent Wins

As I reported last week, Flyers owner Ed Snider was in Rome during the Flyers’ 7 day break. Above you can see Snider and his wife meeting with the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis. Perhaps Pope Francis put in a word for the Flyers with the big man upstairs, because since that meeting the Flyers have won both of their games — including 5 goals in Saturday night’s...

Flyers fan wears a great costume to the game

Fan were encouraged to wear their costumes to the Wells Fargo Center tonight for the Flyers-Ducks game. This fan, whether she won the costume or not, is awesome.

Having scored three goals, Flyers go for three straight wins

Vincent Lecavalier netted a hat trick in the Flyers 5-2 win on Saturday and now leads the team with four goals this season. Photo Courtesy of ESPN.com The Flyers just followed a week off with wins on Thursday and Saturday. On Saturday, in their 10th game of the season, they broke the trend of scoring two goals or less, beating the Islanders, 5-2.  With that blemish removed following...

Duck and Cover: Flyers fall on another late goal

Kyle Palmieri scores his second goal of the game in a 3-2 Flyers loss to the Ducks on Tuesday. Photo Courtesy of ESPN.com For the first 20 minutes, the Philadelphia Flyers played like a determined team, a team that had turned the corner on the worst start in franchise history. But as the energy disappeared, the Flyers quickly reverted back to old ways. The Anaheim Ducks would rally...

Lecavalier hat trick spurs Flyers

Vinny Lecavalier scored three goals in Philadelphia's biggest offensive outburst of the season, and Steve Mason made 26 saves to lift the Flyers to a 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night. The Flyers (3-7) hadn't scored more than two goals in any of their first nine games. One more and they would have become the first NHL team to have a season-opening...

Flyers All-Time Team

Over their forty-six year history the Philadelphia Flyers have won two Stanley Cups and have displayed an immense amount of talent at all positions. We have seen greatness and we are awaiting the next great one. Here is my Flyers All-Star team.   CENTER: Bobby Clarke- The scrawny diabetic kid who shaved with a Kleenex from Flin Flon, Manitoba was a ferocious and relentless player...

Flyers 'lucky' to be close in standings

Despite an awful start, the Flyers enter Tuesday’s game against visiting Anaheim just five points out of a playoff spot _ and with two games in hand on Carolina, the team holding that position. “Our division has been struggling at the start of the year,” center Sean Couturier said after Tuesday’s morning skate at the Wells Fargo Center. “We’re lucky we’re in that situation...

Duck, Duck, Lose: Flyers’ Win Streak Ends at Two After Loss to Anaheim

Despite a first period that showed some promise, the Flyers were unable to hold off the Anaheim Ducks and saw their first loss in three games. Matt Read and Vinny Lecavalier were responsible for the two Philadelphia goals, while Kyle Palmieri scored two and Andrew Cogliano also scored for Anaheim. The Flyers got off to a slow start in the first period, but once Read opened up the...

Anaheim Ducks (9-3-0) @ Philadelphia Flyers (3-7-0), 7:00pm, CSN-Philly/PRIME After a pair of wins, the Philadelphia Flyers find themselves sitting at 3-7-0 and arguably still searching for their first impressive victory of the season. With one win coming against a Florida Panthers team that saw Tim Thomas let in two soft goals and a sloppy win against the New York Rangers, the...

See: Awesome Stone Cold Steve Mason Photoshop

Credit for this one goes out to Fake Peter Laviolette on Twitter. Fake Lavy considered stopping the use of that account after real Laviolette was fired, but we’re all thankful he’s kept it going. The Flyers’ Steve Mason has been nothing short of spectacular this year. He’s easily been Philaelphia’s best player, and it shows in his 2.17 goals against average and .930 save...

Op/Ed: The Thrill is Gone

There was a time when the Flyers would keep fans on the edge of their seats, a time when the team could never be counted out because they would somehow find ways to come back and win. A time when fans expected the Flyers to win because they were a good team, not because it’s what we wanted. That time is now over. Even in brief, exciting periods of time throughout games, there is...

A Look At The Metropolitan Division

from Ryan Dixon of Sportsnet, The only squad in the eight-team Metropolitan currently above .500 is the Pittsburgh Penguins. The only team besides Pittsburgh to score more goals than it has allowed is the Columbus Blue Jackets and their whopping plus-2 differential. A trio of clubs—the Rangers, Flyers and Devils—have three or fewer wins this year. Should we all have...
