During a twitter conversation, I saw somebody claim the Flyers were lucky to get a franchise goalie in Steve Mason. While I am far from being sold on the franchise goalie part, I took special exception to the luck angle.
The Flyers have had an interest in Steve Mason for several years. I first heard the rumors of this interest back in 2009-10, when Ray Emery was first diagnosed with his avascular necrosis and the Flyers were faced with sticking with Brian Boucher and re-entry waiver claim Michael Leighton as their goalies. Mason was in his second year, after a Calder Trophy rookie year, and struggling… But the price was too high for the Flyers at the time.
