from Tim Wharnsby of CBC, Who will make the playoffs? Who will be the last team standing in late June? But there will be other underlying interesting matters to follow. Can the Detroit Red Wings continue their consecutive season playoff streak without Nicklas Lidstrom? It's at 21 and counting. The Montreal Canadiens had made the playoffs 24 straight times entering the last shortened season in 1995. But that streak went kaput with an 11th-place finish in the East. Will this be the swan song seasons for Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson and Anaheim Ducks forever-young forward Teemu Selanne? The 40-year-old Alfredsson and the 42-year-old Selanne both topped the 25-goal mark last season and may keep going if they can stay healthy. We'll also see how the extra four months off will help their games. Can a Canadian NHL team win the Stanley Cup? read on

Detroit Red Wings look lost without Nicklas Lidstrom

Life without Nicklas Lidstrom might be quite an adventure for the Detroit Red Wings. They lost their first game without him 6-0 at St. Louis. The Blues outshot them 17-2 in the first period and kept skating circles around them all night. Goaltender Jimmy Howard allowed five goals (on 28 shots) before taking an early exit. “We really had nothing going, except for Howie in the net...

Red Wings skate into a new era without Lidstrom

The Detroit Red Wings have played in the last 21 Stanley Cup playoffs. That postseason streak might be in jeopardy. The storied franchise is starting a season without seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom for the first time since the 1990-91, the year its run in the playoffs began. Lidstrom retired last summer and the 42-year-old defenseman turned down an offer from...

Video- Selanne Still Has It

Teemu Selanne had a four points last night in a win over the Canucks.  Kelly Hrudy and Scott Oake of HNIC's After Hours spent ten minutes with Selanne.

Selanne and Ducks Trounce Vancouver 7-3

He might be the oldest player in the NHL, but he is still better than guys half his age.  Teemu Selanne, 42 1/2, had two goals and two assists to help the Ducks defeat the Canucks 7-3 in their opening game of the season.   He earned the number one star of the game and star of the whole NHL opening night for his efforts. What is even scarier?  Hearing Selanne, who is the oldest...

Ducks-Flames Preview

Ageless wonder Teemu Selanne helped the Anaheim Ducks kick off their season in impressive fashion. The Calgary Flames' opener didn't go nearly as well. The Ducks look to make it two in a row Monday night as they face the Flames, who try to avoid dropping their first two home games for the first time in five seasons. Even at 42, Selanne appears to have plenty left in the...

Retired Red Wings Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom to appear at The Ticket’s SportsFest in Feb.

I don't want the Thursday practice post to get buried by today's waiver news--I'm still updating it with mid-day news stories as there are changes in the respective statuses of Mikael Samuelsson (probably good to go Saturday), Darren Helm (is improving), Joey MacDonald (confusing situation) and Jakub Kindl (sore groin, out for the weekend)--nor do I want the Griffins...

Selanne shines in Ducks' win over Canucks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Teemu Selanne had two goals and two assists Saturday to help make Cory Schneider's first NHL season-opening start a short one and the Anaheim Ducks thumped the Vancouver Canucks 7-3. Daniel Winnik added two goals for the Ducks while Sheldon Souray, Corey Perry and Kyle Palmieri also scored. Schneider was pulled from the Vancouver net after...

Duhatschek and Red Wings GM Ken Holland discuss the post-Lidstrom era

The Red Wings afternoon post-practice news post will still be updated for the next hour or two (as the Red Wings' beat writers file their practice reports), but, via RedWingsFeed, the Globe and Mail's Eric Duhatschek leads off his weekly notebook with an intriguing conversation held with one Red Wings gM Ken Holland about his team's attempts to sustain its 21-year playoff...

Ducks 7, Canucks 3

Ken Holland lowers expectations on Red Wings

The Red Wings suffered a huge blow with the retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom. Many fans of the Red Wings can't remember a time where he wasn't dominating their blue line, and now this season they'll be looking at Carlo Colaiacovo back there. Tomas Holmstrom is retiring officially on Tuesday, and while they will be captained by the always excellent Henrik Zetterberg and...
