Chicago Blackhawks News –When Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews take the ice in Sochi, Russia Thursday morning you might notice they look slightly smaller. As they begin skating they will be a step ahead of the defense. Differences in Olympic ice compared to NHL ice and new equipment will shrink their looks. The new equipment will magnify their skills. Rink Size Do not adjust your TV. All of the skaters probably look smaller than usual. An Olympic rink is wider than an NHL sheet of ice. It also has a larger neutral zone. * NHL – IIHF Major Rule Differences * What This Means For Kane and Toews More room to dangle More room to build speed bringing the puck across the blue line New Equipment Bauer introduced a new line of equipment called OD1N for six elite NHL players. Bauer OD1N athletes are Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin, Claude Giroux and Henrik Lundqvist. The Chicago Blackhawks are fortunate enough to have two of those players who will be debuting the equipment in Sochi. The equipment took two years of development and research. Bauer’s goal was to create significant advantages for their elite athletes on the ice. In doing so the company removed any restrictions of cost, materials and the commercialization process. “For all you young hockey players out there” as Eddie Olczyk would say, do not expect to see this same equipment in the stores. Because Bauer had no restrictions on cost for the commercialization, it was never intended to be available for everyone. The company used 3-D scanners to ensure these six players would receive an exact fit of their equipment. Skate Features Skate boot is 1/3 lighter than Bauer’s lightest boot Propritary materials inside of the skate boot Carbon blade holder Body Suit Features Removed four lbs. of weight making it 1/3 lighter than all other elite level equipment Use of a body scan optimizes the suit for performance and protection Thinner and lighter materials High end proprietary materials can be customized unlike traditional materials More information on equipment at Bauer.com What This Means For Kane and Toews Bauer’s research quantified the results of their lighter and more responsive equipment. In a 50 foot sprint they will be able to reach the puck one foot earlier than their opponent. Because of the decrease in weight carried they will move 1,000 less lbs. during a 60 minute game. Those numbers would suggest Kane being able to make his spins quicker and will be able to dangle later in games. Toews will be able to take the edge faster to get around the defenders and crash the net. Overall We will see faster skating and more filthy moves from Kane and Toews in Sochi as a result of more skating room and lighter equipment. _______ Photo(s): IIHF; Committed Indians     Author informationMLPaprzycaFeatured Columnist at Sports MockeryChicago made. Patrick Sharp Says Goodbye To Daughter While Sporting Matching Hairstyle (Photo)

Patrick Sharp does goodbye’s in style — fancy hairstyles, anyway. Before the Chicago Blackhawks forward heads to Sochi to represent Team Canada in his first ever Olympic Games, he had to get one last hug and goodbye in with his daughter, Madelyn. The priceless picture also features Sharp rocking a look that would be difficult to sport with a helmet on — a ponytail that matches...

A lot to like about first part for Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks head into the NHL's Olympic break in prime position to defend their Stanley Cup title. Now comes the part that really matters. The Blackhawks (35-11-14) were shut out for the first time this season when they lost 2-0 at Phoenix on Friday night. But their six-game trip leading up to the break including impressive wins at Los Angeles and Anaheim that helped...

After leading the Blackhawks to a 29-41-8 record in 2000-01, Alpo Suhonen went down quickly as the head coach in Chicago. But during the Olympic Opening Ceremony on Friday night, Suhonen went down even faster. On Friday, a picture began circulating of a member of Team Austria wiping out as they entered Fisht Olympic Stadium. Now, the Chicago Tribune via a Finnish newspaper, has...

The 2014 Winter Olympics are underway and although the women’s hockey tournament has already started, the men’s tournament doesn’t start until Feb. 12. This means the men have a couple days to spend some quality time together in the athletes’ village. Patrice Bergeron is the lone Boston Bruin representing Canada in the Olympics, meaning he’ll be bunking up with an NHL enemy...

SOCHI SCENE: Music to her ears

As Jamie Anderson was hopping around elated at the base of the women's slopestyle course, having just completed Team USA's double gold in slopestyle, you have to think the folks back home in Cupertino, Calif., were thrilled to see those two little white earbuds hanging out of her jacket. Maybe winning gold while rocking out is to be expected in a sport the Winter Games adopted...

Vancouver’s Rooting Interest In Team Canada

from Jordan Bowman and Wyatt Arndt of the Vancouver Province,  ...the roster is comprised of some NHL players who, as Canucks fans, we are used to hating (a Boston Bruin is on the team!). So, in the spirit of national unity, here is how we talk about each player during the season, and how we will talk about him during the Olympic tournament. JAY BOUWMEESTER During the...

Team United States: Olympic Hockey Preview

For one day, I’m pretending to be Dan Bylsma, head coach of the American hockey team. Here are the lines that I would roll out for Team USA in the Sochi Winter Olympics. Forwards Zach Parise – Ryan Kesler – Patrick Kane Captain Parise plays with a great two-way forward in Kesler, and the best scorer on this team (Kane). This line will be dynamic, and Kane will need to play...
