Canyon of Blueshirts:
Welcome to New York
With Alex Frolov done for the season and Vinny Prospal yet to play, Glen Sather made a move to acquire much needed top six depth. In trading Michal Rozsival, the Rangers will likely have the youngest d-corps in the NHL. This is both a blessing and a burden as the Rangers will likely need to acquire a veteran blueliner for a playoff run. However, in acquiring 24 year old Wojtek Wolski the Rangers take a gamble while continuing their dedication to youth. He is a highly talented player whose game is incomplete; he struggles to dedicate himself on a nightly basis. He has rightfully earned the title 'enigmatic'. After being traded mid-season for Peter Mueller last year he scored 18 points in 18 games, this season he has only 16 points in 36 games for the 'Yotes. Despite the inconsistency, his upside is tremendous and well worth the risk.Even if Wolski doesn't round out his game, he is a worthy gamble at the cost of Michal Rozsival. The trade also brings the added benefit of clearing additional cap space for this years deadline while also saving $1.2 million for next years cap. That saved space could be the difference in potentially signing Brad Richards. Young and affordable offensive talent isn't easy to find in the NHL and long term a 24 year old Wolski has a lot more potential value than a 32 year old Michal Rozisval who hasn't been the same player since his hip surgery two years ago.
The key to this deal is the Rangers acquire a young talent without sacrificing a piece of their future.
