Derek Stepan and Brandon Dubinsky collected a goal and an assist apiece and All-Star Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 20 shots as host New York won a physical contest over the New Jersey Devils 4-2 on Monday to secure a postseason berth. Mats Zuccarello scored for the second time in as many games and All-Star defenseman Dan Girardi also tallied for the Rangers, who split the six-game season series (3-3-0) and pulled three points ahead of idle Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Division. The rivals didn't waste time renewing acquaintances as three fights erupted simultaneously three seconds into the contest. With New Jersey defenseman Bryce Salvador receiving a 10-minute misconduct for trying to pull Stu Bickell off a bloodied Ryan Carter, a total of 40 minutes of penalties were distributed. After Patrik Elias trimmed the Rangers' lead to 2-1 at 5:03 of the second period with a sharp-angle shot, Zuccarello regained the two-goal advantage exactly 2 1/2 minutes l...

Lundqvist's Positioning Helps Mentally & Physically

Elliotte Friedman at CBC Sports has this quote from former Rangers back-up goaltender Alex Auld on what makes Henrik Lundqvist so good..."Henrik is so efficient. Because he plays so deep, he doesn't need to move much. He's able to take in more [mentally] and there's less confusion going in his head. He's focused. Able to read the play. It's very hard to teach...

Rangers edge Devils, clinch playoff spot in East

Brandon Dubinsky scored shortly after a fight-filled opening faceoff, and the New York Rangers became the first Eastern Conference team to earn a playoff spot by beating the New Jersey Devils 4-2 on Monday night. Three fights broke out at the outset and that seemed to jump-start the Rangers, who had lost two straight and five of seven as their once commanding lead in the East dwindled...

Morning Skate Notes: Anisimov Out; Lundqvist Starts; Lines

The Rangers report that Artem Anisimov (shoulder) participated in the morning skate, but will not be in the line-up against the Devils tonight....great to see AA practicing again. Assuming he should be back at some point this week. Will be interesting to see who gets scratched when he's ready. The Rangers also report that Henrik Lundqvist will get the start tonight....he better...

MVP So Far This Season

In January I picked Evgeni Malkin as the MVP so far this season.  In February, Henrik Lundqvist took the MVP lead.  I am back to picking Malkin as MVP.  When I picked Lundqvist he was posting a .940 saves percentage and a 1.78 GAA.  Those numbers have fallen to a .934 saves percentage and 1.89 GAA.  While those are still Vezina Trophy numbers they are not good enough to be...

Finding a way to keep Zuccarello

The Rangers need to find a way to keep Mats Zuccarello with the organisation and in the line-up beyond this season. He provides the club with something different and can make a difference when he’s given the opportunity; as the win against the Devils showed. Even with guys like Kreider en route there needs to be a place for the little Norwegian. Throwing Zuccarello on the ice after...

Rangers Hold Off Devils; Recap

Two smart periods and one sloppy period equals Rangers win. It wasn’t perfect but the Rangers got what they deserved out of the game as they beat the Devils 4-2. They were the better team throughout and ten minutes aside in the second controlled play, were defensively solid and could have scored more if not for some sharp goaltending by Brodeur. On to the notes from the game...

Rangers Clinch Playoff Spot With 4-2 Win Over the Devils

While the first three seconds of the hockey game between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils provided a lot of theatrics, it all ended up meaning very little for the rest of the game as the Rangers went onto to clinch a playoff spot by beating the Devils by a score of 4-2. For the first since the 2005-06 season, the Blueshirts managed to clinch a playoff spot with a few weeks...

Postgame: Rangers Fulfill Needs, Including Clinching Playoff Spot, in Win Over Devils

The New York Rangers needed a response tonight and they got it. The Rangers needed two points to spread their lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the East, and they got them. The Rangers needed to clinch a playoff spot with a win against their rivals and they got it. Tonight’s 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden was all you could’ve asked...
