File this under "too good to be true." The New York Rangers have interviewed Mark Messier for their head coaching position. No, seriously. They have interviewed someone with no coaching experience to lead their team deeper into the playoffs than John Tortorella did.  Why Messier? Well, besides the fact that he's such a great leader he has a trophy named after him (and sponsored by Bridgestone!), he also called the Rangers' 1994 Stanley Cup. Promised it, even. So, all he has to do now is say "I promise that the Rangers will make it past the second round of the playoffs," and if they do, he's the greatest coach ever. Also, it's worth noting that Messier is currently employed with the team as Special Assistant to the General Manager and President, which entails giving out large checks at center ice to extremely worthy causes. It's a shame that Alain Vigneault will probably beat him out for the coaching position, finally proving that having the inside track isn't worth much when you have someone more qualified interviewing for the same job.  [follow]
