With time winding down in the second period of the game between the New York Rangers and New York Islanders on Thursday night, a puck off the stick of Rangers defenseman Marc Staal struck MSG Network sideline (side-rink?) reporter John Giannone. With Staal attempting to clear the defensive zone, the puck flew into the space between the Rangers and Islanders benches, the location that has become popular for NHL broadcasts to place a reporter in order to get up-close, rink-level analysis. Unfortunately for John Giannone, the puck bore down upon like a heat-seeking missile, striking him right in the face, appearing to do the most damage around the area of the bridge of his nose. Ouch. As his announcing cohorts said, Giannone clearly is a gamer, as while he’s being treated by medical personnel, he shows the grittiness of an NHL enforcer and continues to work. One tough reporter, that’s for sure. Those guys who brave that potentially dangerous environment between the benches deserve hazard pay. I suppose it’s only fitting that the people who cover the toughest sport in the world are the toughest reporters in the world.
