Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Rangers are expected to investigate Devils free agent defenseman Marek Zidlicky this summer. The 36-year old Zidlicky, who just completed a three-year deal that paid him $4 million per, had 4g, 15a and was a -12 last season. He has 176 (45g, 131a) power play points during his career. ...earlier in his career Zidlicky was a stud on the power play, now he's nothing more than serviceable with the extra man. Although on the Rangers, serviceable would be a welcome change. At 36, I'd hate to see the Rangers offer anything more than a two-year deal at $2.5 million per. ...although with the way former Devils have performed on the Rangers (ie Gomez, Holik & Driver), I would almost rather they look in another direction. Speaking of tri-state area UFA defensemen, Brooks adds that the Rangers are not likely to pursue Islanders captain Mark Streit when he hits free agency on July 5th. According to reports, Streit could command a 4-year deal averaging $6 million per. ...while Sather might be the trade guru, his free agency history leaves a lot to be desired, so I couldn't be happier to hear this report. No way the Rangers should be signing a 35-year old defensemen for that kind of money or years. Finally, Brooks notes that when the Rangers front office convenes at Glen Sather’s Western White House in La Quinta, Calif. for their organizational meetings today, besides the head coaching vacancy, they'll also focus on Brad Richards’ amnesty buyout and Ryane Clowe’s pending unrestricted free agency. If they Rangers decide to re-sign Clowe they'll be obligated to send a second-round pick to the Sharks in 2014 in addition to the second and third in 2013 already sent San Jose’s way as part of the trade deadline deal. If the Rangers don't re-sign Clowe it'll be a fifth round pick headed to the Sharks. ...during Clowe's short stint with the Rangers, I really liked what I saw, but the concussions are very concerning and you have to wonder if they'll force him to curb the physical style of play that makes him so effective. Which is why, unless the Rangers can get Clowe dirt cheap, I'd rather see them pass. It's bad enough they already sent San Jose 2nd & 3rd round picks, no need to send them any further early round selections for a guy who might be on the IR more than the ice.
