PLAYERS: Erik Karlsson
TEAMS: Ottawa Senators
In a playoff preview at USA Today, Kevin Allen gives this Rangers game plan for dealing with Senators All Star defenseman Erik Karlsson..."But the Rangers are a gritty, hard-nosed team and they are going to test Karlsson with greater purpose than any opponent has to date. They will undoubtedly punish him for carrying the puck. He is 21, and he weighs 180 pounds. Although Karlsson overall had a great season, he didn't have a goal in his final 11 games. He was a minus-player in five of his last 10 games. Maybe he was getting worn out. Or maybe, he just needed the playoffs to start to re-energize his game. Count on the Rangers finding out which of those statements are true."...i hope the Rangers do carryout this game plan for Karlsson. I absolutely love it when teams decide the best way to deal with an opponent's star player is to pound them physically and see how they respond....the Senators are an offensively gifted team, but I think if the Rangers can play physical...

What to Watch For: Erik Karlsson's Ice-time

Down by two goals at the start of the third period in their eventual 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, one of the small subtleties that I noticed were the number of regular shifts that Erik Karlsson was taking without his regular defensive partner, Filip Kuba. Via DobberHockey.com's Frozen Pool component (you have to pay for the service) here is a look at Karlsson's even...

Senators Know They Can Beat The Rangers

Senators Captain Daniel Alfredsson told Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun this regarding Ottawa's chances in the series..."We've played pretty good against them and we know it's been close games. We also know that we can beat them, but we're going to have to play our best because they've shown they're one of the best teams in the league throughout 82 games...

Senators Own Rangers At MSG

Don Brennan at the Ottawa Sun reports on the Senators success at Madison Square Garden..."In the all-time series between the two teams, the Senators are 23-13-0-1 at MSG — 11-2 since the lockout and 14-3 in their last 17 visits."Here's Daniel Alfredsson on the Senators game plan going into the series..."We're going to go in and give it everything we have...

Bad Blood With Senators This Season

When the final buzzer ended another NHL regular season last night, the Rangers found themselves surprisingly matched-up against the Ottawa Senators. While the Senators present a tough match-up for the Rangers with players such as Spezza, Alfredsson, Michalek and Karlsson, they might also be out for revenge as there was some bad blood between the two teams earlier this season.Back...

Three Key Match-Ups That Will Decide Rangers vs. Senators Series

The New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators have never before met beyond regular season play, but that will change Thursday night at Madison Square Garden when the Blueshirts host the Sens in game one of the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. A top seed versus bottom seed match-up is often one that isn’t very difficult to predict before it begins, and the Rangers are arguably...

Systems Breakdown: Ottawa Senators

Of the three potential first round match-ups, the Senators were the last team I wanted to draw in the opening round. I know on paper the Senators probably look less scary than the Capitals, but from a systems/coaching standpoint, I think the Rangers are going to have their hands full and part of that is because of their ability to execute a well balanced hybrid trap system. Side...

Rallying Cry: Alfie's Last Playoffs?

Just last week, Sportsnet's Ian Mendes penned an article describing how this season represented what could perhaps be the ideal situation or best circumstances under which Daniel Alfredsson could retire. Last year at this time, Alfredsson seriously contemplated retirement when he was sidelined with an injury that required season-ending surgery. At the start of this season,...

GM Murray Speaks to Hockey Central

With the Senators' quarterfinal matchup with the New York Rangers only three days away, general manager Bryan Murray made an appearance on today's Hockey Central panel on the Fan 590. To listen to the show, you can click here. You can read more after the jump. As always, my thoughts are in bold. Millard: When did you feel confident that you were going to make...

Bruins Play Caps not Sens

After a wild day of hockey yesterday, the Capitals jumped up to the number seven seed and will play the Bruins in the first round.  For the last month it looked like the Bruins would be playing the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the 2012 playoffs, but after Ottawa’s loss yesterday and wins by both the Panthers and Capitals that all changed.  Now the Bruins will have to...

It's the most wonderful time of the hockey year and I am going to celebrate it by breaking down every series. Evening Line

“I think I look at it as it could be my last playoffs and I’m going to treat it as such, too.  Who knows if I’m playing next year (or) if we’ll get back to the playoffs—you just want to make sure you enjoy it and make the most of it.” -Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators.  More on Alfredsson from Erin Nicks at NHL.com.

Looking at the Rangers' Checklist to Success in Series Against Senators

And obviously, with this being a Rangers blog and all...
