New York Rangers coach John Tortorella thought Monday's NHL Winter Classic was anything but - at least as far as the officiating was concerned.
In the wake of New York's 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Citizens Bank Park, Tortorella blasted the officiating, calling it "disgusting" in the final period.
Tortorella went so far as to suggest that NBC Sports - which televised the game nationally - had conspired with the NHL to extend the contest beyond regulation.
“I’m not sure if NBC got together with the refs and wanted to turn this into an overtime game,” Tortorella said. “I’m not sure if they had meetings about that or what.”
Tortorella was rankled by two calls in particular in the final minute, including one that led to a penalty shot with 19.6 seconds to play.
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped Philadelphia's Danny Briere after New York defensman Ryan McDonagh was whistled for covering the puck in the crease.
