Michal Neuvirth made 22 saves and the Washington Capitals scored three goals in the game’s final five minutes on Tuesday night to win their game with the New York Islanders 3-2 inside Verizon Center.  Troy Brouwer scored two goals in three minutes to tie the game late in regulation before Alex Ovechkin won it as the Capitals moved into a playoff position for the first time in what seems like forever.  What was so odd about this game was that it was almost a carbon copy of Washington's first game after the deadline last year, also against the Isles.  The Caps trailed late before tying it and then getting a winning goal from their Captain. The game got off to a rather stagnant start, with neither team getting sustained pressure and a bunch of whistles in the first three minutes of the game.  That early lack of action did not last long, however, as Josh Bailey danced through the Washington defense and backhanded one past Michal Neuvirth for a 1-0 lead.  Soon after however the Ca...

Capitals Seizing Control Of Season, Just In Time

Let's roll the clocks back one week. The Capitals had just been jolted twice in two days at the hands of the Senators and lowly Hurricanes by a combined score of 10-2. Head coach Dale Hunter was rapidly losing control of his team, criticizing the play of his starting goaltender publicly and a 20-year veteran privately. The locker room was falling apart at the seams. The trade...

Capitals' Troy Brouwer picks dramatic time to end long scoreless spell

Troy Brouwer had gotten all too used to the puck bouncing off his stick. Or hitting the post, or an opposing goaltender's pads. Or missing the net entirely. Fourteen games the Washington Capitals right wing went without a goal, making his hat trick Jan. 14 seem like part of a ...

McPhee Makes Safe Choice

Today had all the makings of a busy day for the Washington Capitals.  Currently sitting in 9th place, the Caps looked primed to make a move that could push them into the playoffs.  This though process seemed reinforced as they started off the day by placing Nicklas Backstrom on LTIR, effectively taking his $6+ million cap hit off the books for the remainder of the season.  This...

McPhee Stays Smart

For weeks, many have said that what the Washington Capitals needed was a spark offensively, and that that spark would come in the form of a center.  The conventional wisdom, of course, was that George McPhee would make his move at the trade deadline, as he has in the past. And yet, as Monday’s 3 PM deadline came and went, the Capitals stood pat. Immediately, the vitriol on...

Simple math for Capitals' playoff formula: No additions, no subtractions

Mike Green took a breath from his answer about the Washington Capitals, post-trade deadline. No moves were made, and the final stretch of the season already is under way. "This is the team," he said. These are the Caps, for better or worse: a team teetering on the edge of ...

Backstrom to Caps long-term injured list (AP)

The Washington Capitals have placed center Nicklas Backstrom on the long-term injured list, starting what could be a busy day at the NHL trade deadline. The Skinny

DALY: When all was said and done, Caps said little and did nothing

ANALYSIS/OPINION: In recent seasons, Trade Deadline Day has been a fireworks show for George McPhee and the Washington Capitals. Without the addition of Sergei Fedorov, Matt Cooke and certainly Cristobal Huet in 2008, the Caps probably wouldn't have made the playoffs. And the deals for Dennis Wideman and Jason Arnott ...
