We hope you like the look of the current Penguins roster because Ray Shero certainly does after not making a single move before yesterday’s Trade Deadline. For the first time since 1989, the Pens stood pat with their current team rather than acquire an upgrade for a playoff run or dump salary before the offseason. But for yinzers out there who can’t believe Shero would take the single most exciting day in hockey off, just remember that the Pens acquired the best player available…when he’s finally healthy. Once Sidney Crosby is back, there’s no way the Pens don’t become the team to beat in the NHL, even if they are sitting in fourth place in the East right now, nine points behind the Rangers. Geno Malkin has been dominating every defense he faces and that’s when opponents only have one Line 1 two prepare for; what happens when the Pens have 1A and 1B hitting the ice one after another? And with the Geno/Neal/Kunitz line owning the score sheet, people forget how great Marc-Andre Fleur...

Penguins D Letang out with upper-body injury

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang left Wednesday night's game against the Dallas Stars in the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return. Letang was down on the ice for several minutes midway through the period after he was hit in the head area on a hard check along the end boards by Dallas' Eric Nystrom. Letang, Pittsburgh's top-scoring defenseman...

Penguins general manager Shero inclined to stand pat for trade deadline

Pens GM Ray Shero has stated on countless occasions that he is pleased with his lineup and that he doesn't believe the current market boasts players who can augment his roster.

Niskanen takes it personally

Matt Niskanen is not a guy who often draws attention to himself. But he made it clear that the Penguins game tonight in Dallas is a lot more to him than just No. 63 of his team's 82 games this season.

Link City: Malkin in SI

The new [Sports Illustrated] has an article about Evgeni Malkin. "Geno can dominate because he understands the spatial part of the game so well," says Bylsma, using the Americanization of Malkin's Russian nickname, which is pronounced ZHEN-ya. "In sheer skill level Geno probably has to be rated higher [than Crosby]. There's magic there, a little...

Penguins scheduled to practice at DU before playing Avs on Saturday

Hart Trophy frontrunner Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins are scheduled to practice at the University of Denver’s Magness Arena on Thursday and Friday. The Pens play tonight at Dallas, then Saturday against the Avalanche. I don’t know if these practices will be open to the public, but here’s some information (if nothing else, this is an autograph opportunity): Ritchie...

Law & Order: PPU

Thanks to my bud Benson for sending over his latest. It's a shot-for-shot redo of the classic opening from Law & Order: SVU. But with the Pittsburgh Penguins. It's exclusive to Facebook, so follow this link and make sure you've "liked" Benstonium if you haven't already. I never got into any Law & Order. But Christopher Meloni was unreal in Wet...

Bill Meltzer: Stars Gameday: 2/29/12 vs. Penguins

PREVIEW 6:00 AM CST Looking for their fifth consecutive win and a stronger grip on at least the eighth spot in the Western Conference playoff chase, the Dallas Stars (33-26-4) face another tall order tonight when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins (36-21-5) at the American Airlines Center. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. CST and will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network....

Penguins defenseman Niskanen excited about facing former teammates

When Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen sees his former teammates with the Dallas Stars, he might greet them with a friendly shoulder check into the boards.

Penguins-Stars Preview

Neither the Pittsburgh Penguins nor the Dallas Stars made any trades this week, but a deal they struck before last season's deadline should still be the talk of the rink Wednesday night. James Neal has blossomed into a star since Dallas sent him to the Penguins, but the surging Stars are hoping to spoil his initial return to Texas and claim a fifth straight victory. Alex Goligoski...

John Toperzer: Penguins Open Thread Trade Deadline Day

The Pens are not expected to deal big with Sidney Crosby expected back (sometime) Follow me on Twitter @John Toperzer A cursory look at the NHL standings shows that all seven non-playoff teams in the East are within 10 points of a playoff spot. Five non-playoff teams in the West are also within 10 points. Since the lockout, there have never been more than five non-playoff teams to...

John Toperzer: GAMEDAY! Neal & Niskanen return to Lone Star State

Pens (36-21-5, 16-13-3 Road) at Stars (33-26-4, 18-12-2 Home), American Airlines Center, 7:38 pm EDT Follow me on Twitter @JohnToperzer At the risk of jinxing the entire 2011-12 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins are the healthiest they’ve been in a long time. Even when the Pens went on a 5-2-1 run with a healthy Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal for an eight...
