The Hurricanes are still paying Jussi Jokinen around $900,000. So when GM Jim Rutherford opens up his bank statment, he is going to vomit uncontrollably. This is basically like enduring a breakup and then having to pay for your ex to go out on unlimited dates, and you have to sit there and watch all of them. Terrible. The Penguins are basically doing whatever they want to their opponents right now. Mind you, they haven't played any of the big boys yet, but you can see the change. The defense is worlds better than last season. Hell, Carolina even had this game tied in the third, and it still felt like the Pens were going to roll. Jussi Jokinen was definitely the story in this one, though. Did you see him? Cam Ward sure did. RECAP:   no words Nice graphic from ROOT on the new cages. FIRST PERIOD The Canes were getting run out of the building early. Jokinen almost put one in on the first rush of the game. Fo...

Hurricanes/Pens Recap by @pghgirl15222

Jussi Jokinen silenced any critics in Carolina Tuesday night with a three goal game against his former team. As part of a ploy to increase cap space, the Hurricanes sent Jokinen to the Penguins, and then agreed to pay part of his salary. Doing the math, The Carolina Hurricanes have paid Jussi Jokinen $300K per goal (against them) this season. Ouch. Thanks for the free candy Carolina...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Pittsburgh Penguins and that pesky Hat Trick

Eric Staal (photo credit by: Justin K. Aller/Getty Images) There’s always a fear in professional sports that when you trade a player, they’ll be coming back at you at some point with a vengeance. Well guess what? It happened to the Carolina Hurricanes when they lost 5-2 against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 9th, 2013. Jussi Jokinen of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored a hat...

Feature Friday: Jussi Jokinen

Jokinen-Pittsburgh Penguins vs Buffalo SabresPhoto Credit:                                Joe Sargent/Getty Images   Throughout the 2013-2014 NHL season, I’ll be posting player features each Friday. This week, we’re going to take a look at Jussi Jokinen. After achieving a hat trick in game three for the Pittsburgh Penguins, you had to see it coming that left...

Matt Karash: Jeff Skinner, Riley Nash, Radek Dvorak oh my! -- Canes line by line

Through 2 games both at home where Coach Kirk Muller has reasonable control over matchups, there is a lot to like about the Canes forward lines so far. It only gets better when you consider that at some point Tuomo Ruutu will be added to the mix and that Elias Lindholm is starting in a very limited role with potential upside as he gets acclimated to the NHL. Going line by line...

This Week in NHL/AHL Former River Hawks (10/9-10/13)

Ron Hainsey joined the Carolina Hurricanes this offseason. (Photo/Kevin Hoffman/USA TODAY Sports) The UMass Lowell River Hawks get their season underway Friday night against Sacred Heart University at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. However, there are a few former River Hawks in regular season action in the NHL and AHL. New this season, View from 123 will do our best to...

Game 3: Penguins vs. Hurricanes Preview

Who’s ready to get extremely hammered on a weekday? If you’re not, don’t play the Staal drinking game. Especially not in this one because this year’s version has an extra twist. If you don’t know the rules, when Jordan Staal was a Penguin, the rule was that you drank any time that it was mentioned…

Jokinen, Penguins top Hurricanes

Jussi Jokinen scored his first career hat trick and the Pittsburgh Penguins pulled away from the Carolina Hurricanes for a 5-2 win Tuesday night. Jokinen, who was acquired from the Hurricanes last spring, helped the Penguins improve to 3-0, opening the scoring in the first period and adding two goals in the third after Carolina drew even at 2-2. Paul Martin and Tanner Glass also...

Matt Karash: Hurricanes Game Day Preview: @Pittsburgh -- Level 2 test on the road

New material from real hockey games and Canes success inspired a bit of a writing spree. If you have not checked in since Sunday’s game recap, you can find 2 blogs that I posted Monday here: Story lines beneath the results: Transformation in process? Jeff Skinner, Riley Nash, Radek Dvorak oh my! -- Canes line by line Winning and playing well at home can sometimes...

the beast and the picnic

It's a Staal night.  Canes games might be the worst games, other than Sabres games, which is odd because there's so much circus theater to love.  We blame Chad LaRose.  I basically made dinner in like 10 minutes before the game so let's dive right in because I'm on 3 hours of sleep and Cam is trying to get at my bacon and butternut squash risotto recipe and I don...

Penguins remain unbeaten, top Hurricanes 5-2

PITTSBURGH -- Jussi Jokinen collected his first hat trick in nearly six years and the Pittsburgh Penguins pulled away from the Carolina Hurricanes for a 5-2 win Tuesday night. Jokinen, who was acquired from the Hurricanes last spring, helped the Penguins improve to 3-0, opening the scoring in the first period and adding two goals in the third after Carolina drew even at 2-2. Paul...

Matt Karash: Hurricanes Game Day Preview: @Washington -- Eric Staal challenge game?

Last night, I posted a blog with Twitter poll results and my thoughts on where Tuomo Ruutu might best fit in the lineup if he returns. You can find that in the archives if you missed it. IMPORTANT TV NOTE: For those local to Raleigh, the game is on SportSouth not the more common FOX Sports Carolinas, so for those going the DVR route, make sure you get the right channel. -...

Ben Case: Game Day DC-Weathering the Storm with the Canes in Town.

The Caps (1-2-0) will face the Carolina Hurricanes(1-1-1) this evening at 7:00 at the Verizon Center in their first matchup of the year in the newly formed Metropolitan division. Despite this being the two teams’ first meeting for the season, both teams are very familiar with each other as they were Southeast division rivals previously. Adding to the tension is the fact that...

Game 3 By the Numbers: Hurricanes at Penguins

If there was anything that could calm the excitement of Sunday's win over the Flyers, it was playing a road game against an elite team like the Pittsburgh Penguins. Most saw this game as a good way to find out where this team is right now and see if they are ready to compete against the top dogs of the Metropolitan Division. With the final score being a 5-2 loss, the answer appears...

Playing to win vs. playing not lose

In the first two games of the year, the Hurricanes have entered the third period with a lead and each game ended with a completely different result. On the home opener Friday night, the Hurricanes held a 2-0 lead over the Detroit Red Wings at the start of the third period. That quickly turned into a one-goal lead after the Wings scored in the first minute of the period and they would...
