The Detroit Red Wings' 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 3 of their second round series was somewhere between a Gustav Nyquist-style master stroke and a Muhammad Ali "rope-a-dope," including its share of controversy and enough post-game chatter to merit its own multimedia post. In terms of the wrap-up thereof, I cannot help but start at what many believe was the crux of the game in Andrew Shaw's presence in Jimmy Howard's crease negating what would have been a game-tying 2-2 goal. The Chicago Tribune's Chris Kuc took note of that sticky wicket from the Hawks' perspectives... Continue reading "Red Wings-Blackhawks Game 3 wrap-up: out-Winged, out-Hawked, outworked"

Babcock enjoying Red Wings' playoff ride

DETROIT -- You might not be able to tell by the expression on his face when he's on the bench, but Red Wings coach Mike Babcock is actually enjoying himself immensely. Babcock has coached better teams. The 2008 Stanley Cup champions and the Canadian Olympic team that won gold in 2010 come to mind first. Still, there's something about his 2013 Red Wings team. "It&...

Ericsson helps fill big holes on Wings' defense

DETROIT -- It seems like just yesterday when Jonathan Ericsson was the young defenseman arriving on the scene and making an impact for the Detroit Red Wings. In the Wings' 2009 playoff run, Ericsson stunned everyone with his four goals and four assists in the 22 games, and by playing three days after an emergency appendectomy. He had played just 19 regular-season games. Now...

Red Wings-Blackhawks practice day updates: Wings stay the Babcockian course; good news for DeKeyser?

After what might be their fnal real "off-day" for some time, the Red Wings got back to work today at Joe Louis Arena (the Blackhawks remained in Chicago for their practice), and something tells me that this is going to be the first of two practice posts, because Wings coach Mike Babcock engaged in a long q and a session with a faithfully-twitter-updating media corps: ...

earninRed Wings overnight report: on defensive learning curves, Brunner, Abdelkader and the coach

I am annoyed. I happen to love mammoth, twenty-printed-page blog entries that eat bandwidth and crash browsers...But ever since we've moved to our now not-so-new software platform, I've got a character limit, so during the playoffs, when the press push is absolutely masive I've had to separate multimedia from the game wrap-ups, and now I'm positing an overnight report...

Red Wings prospect news: Jarnkrok wins gold with Sweden; Frk’s Mooseheads stumble at Memorial Cup

Team Sweden captured the World Championship today, defeating Switzerland 5-2, and while Niklas Kronwall's definitely proud of his brother Staffan (who captained the team) having won the first Swedish gold on home ice since 2006, and Damien Brunner's probably paying some lost bets this evening... One Wings prospect did take part in the Worlds, and he shared a gold-filled...

Pavel Datsyuk’s Goal Helps Detroit Red Wings Put Away Chicago Blackhawks in Game 3: Video

Pavel Datsyuk simply continues to amaze. With the Detroit Red Wings clinging to a 2-1 lead in the third period of Game 3 against the Chicago Blackhawks (and after a couple of controversial decisions by the refs), Datsyuk roofed a wrist shot over Corey Crawford’s shoulder to put Detroit back up two en route to a 3-1 win. Johan Franzen carried the puck into the Chicago zone, flipped...

Hit ticks off Wings; Blackhawks fume over disallowed goal

DETROIT -- In the Chicago Blackhawks' minds, it was the turning point of Game 3. For the Detroit Red Wings, it was only fair. With the Wings leading 2-0 in the third period Monday night, Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson knocked Johan Franzen down along the boards in the Blackhawks' end. While Franzen lay crumpled to the ice, the Blackhawks were headed the other way...

Young Red Wings have evened series with Blackhawks

The Detroit Red Wings have gotten much younger than they used to be. And now, as the Chicago Blackhawks are finding out, Detroit is a much better team than it was during the lockout-delayed regular season thanks to its improved cast of inexperienced players. Red Wings rookie Brendan Smith netted game-winning goal in Saturday's series-evening, 4-1 win at Chicago. First-year...

GDT - WCSF Game 3: Red Wings (1-1) host Hawks (1-1) 7:30

Who are these guys?  After getting skated into the ground and taken to the woodshed in game 1, DET pawned CHI in game 2.  The Wings were so damn good, the 'Hawks Captain, having no excuses for his teams ineptitude, accused them of cheating:  “I’m not going to go off and complain about some calls that I thought should have been called or whatever,” Toews said, before...

Red Wings beat Blackhawks to take 2-1 series lead

The Chicago Blackhawks were controlling the puck and dominating play early in the second period. It took all of a half-minute for the Detroit Red Wings to swing the momentum. Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller scored 31 seconds apart midway through a previously scoreless game, helping the Red Wings beat the Blackhawks 3-1 on Monday night for a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference second...

The Detroit Red Wings took to the ice at Joe Louis Arena to prepare for Game 3 against the Chicago Blackhawks tonight (7:30 PM EDT, NBCSN/CBC/97.1 FM, post-game on FSD), and the Wings' morning skate was relatively uneventful: Wings skating with same lines and D pairs: 93-13-8, 51-40-11, 14-63-24, 20-25-17; 44, 22 work in; 55-52, 27-2, 28-4, 18; 37, 43 not on ice. —...
