Red Wings GM Ken Holland spoke to WDFN's Art Regner this morning, and, over the course of a 7:25 interview, he VERY specifically stated that Pavel Datsyuk's issues involve inflammation of the left knee that does not require surgery, but instead, requires rest--which is a sticky wicket--though Datsyuk will see a doctor on Wednesday. Holland says that Datsyuk's, "Day to day" and may or may not play on Thursday as the Wings are hoping that a little more rest will give Datsyuk enough time to heal without adding no-playing-time rust. Red Wings' Datsyuk will sit for at least three weeks

DETROIT -- Most people expected the Red Wings to acquire a defenseman at the trade deadline if they did anything. But then general manager Ken Holland started getting worrisome news on Pavel Datsyuk and Darren Helm, causing him to trade for center David Legwand from Nashville instead. While talking about the trade for Legwand, Holland announced that the Wings will shut Datsyuk (left...

Red Wings Monday practice post in progress: Datsyuk’s maintenance days increase?

It appears that, from here on out--and as the Red Wings begin a slate of 3 games to be played over the course of 4 nights and 5 in 8--Pavel Datsyuk won't be skating in any practices, and I wouldn't be surprised that 70% Magic Man skips some morning skates. MLive's Ansar Khan and the Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness reported that Datsyuk didn't practice on Saturday...

Wings will face Devils without Datsyuk

February was a pretty good month for Mike Babcock, who won a gold medal as coach of the Canadian Olympic team and helped his Detroit Red Wings climb back into the Eastern Conference playoff race. Babcock is hoping to carry those good fortunes into March, starting Tuesday night when the Red Wings travel to New Jersey to face the Devils. The Red Wings (28-20-12) have won both games...

28 minutes’ worth of Ken Holland speaking to the media

Because, should you wish to do so, the Red Wings posted 28 minutes' worth of GM Ken Holland speaking with the media regarding the acquisition of David Legwand, the team's decision to "shut down" Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik...

Finding a Silver Lining in Ken Holland’s Trade for David Legwand

David Legwand will center Detroit’s top line Thursday. (hockeyschedule, Flickr) Maybe Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland overpaid for center David Legwand. Maybe it’s a move that will not matter in the long run anyway, with the Wings struggling to stay in the playoff race. But Ken Holland would not have been a buyer at the NHL’s trade deadline if he did not think...

Red Wings' Datsyuk day-to-day with 'knee issue'

Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard will get the start against New Jersey Devils veteran Martin Brodeur on Tuesday in a battle of teams jockeying for playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Howard, who is 1-1-0 with a 1.51 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in two career starts against the Devils, will have to be at his best with forwards Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik...

Red Wings trade for magic leg

The Red Wings are the walking wounded. Going into the trade deadline needing defensive help Nicklas Lidstrom to come out of retirement, Kenny Holland instead found himself needing to buy a bandaid.  Detroit native David Legwand is that temporary relief. The finger in the ****.  Holland traded Patrick Eaves, prospy Calle Jarnkrok, and a 3rd round draft pick for the 33-year...

Detroit Red Wings Trade Rumors: Front Office ‘Likes’ Alex Edler

Still nothing groundbreaking out of the Detroit Red Wings as the NHL trade deadline draws close. If there is a deal to be made, though, signs continue to point toward Vancouver for Ken Holland’s best chance to get it done. Already, there has been speculation that the Red Wings might be interested in center Ryan Kesler, a Michigan native with two years left on his current contract...

Countdown: The Top Five Detroit Red Wings’ Trade Deadline Deals From a Bygone Era

Once upon a time, the Detroit Red Wings didn’t have to do business with a pesky salary cap hanging over their heads. That made hockey’s annual trade deadline day a lot more fun than it currently is, given Ken Holland routinely is now forced to deal with financial constraints and realities. Back when the Red Wings were competing for the Stanley Cup every year and hockey money...

Video: Johan Franzen Scores Against Marty Brodeur on Remarkable Individual Effort

Minus Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, the Detroit Red Wings need Johan Franzen to roll his recent hot streak into an extended scoring run. He got off to a strong start there Tuesday night against the New Jersey Devils. With the Wings trailing 1-0 but on the power play in the first period, Franzen forced a turnover, kicked the puck up to his stick, then circled out of the corner...

ESPN’s LeBrun ponders whether Red Wings might target Ehrhoff, Robidas

As Red Wings fans read the lovely news regarding Pavel Datsyuk, Stephen Weiss, Daniel Cleary and Jakub Kindl's injuries (all of a sudden, Joakim Andersson's the 1st line center?), pondered practice stuff and can now read Michigan Radio and Deadspin's takes on the Red Wings' rink deal and form their own conclusions... ESPN's Pierre LeBrun's been busy scrounging...

After today's practice, they'll fly to New Jersey to kick off a slate of 3 games played over the course of 4 nights and a total of 5 in 8 afternoons and evenings (Sunday's game against the Rangers is a matinee). After a two-day break on March 12th and 13th, the team will play...
